SENIOR RESEARCH OFFICER – Competition and Tariff Commission

SENIOR RESEARCH OFFICER
Applications are invited from the suitably qualified and experienced personnel to fill the position of the Senior Research Officer that has arisen within the Commission.

Key Responsibilities

1. Undertake studies on competition and trade tariffs in any sector of the economy
2. Undertake economic analysis (market definition, market shares and concentration levels, market entry conditions,
etc.) on competition cases (mergers, and restrictive and unfair business practices) under investigation or examina¬tion.
3. Identify, through use of appropriate analytical tools and models, industries and sectors that are prone to restrictive business practices and to unfair trade practices.
4. Conduct socio-economic impact studies on the implementation of competition policy and law and trade tariffs policies.
5. Compile articles and publish the Commission’s Newsletter
6. Compile database of cases examined by the Commission
7. Undertaking additional research into competition cases at adjudication stage and assisting in the drafting of full scale investigations reports
8. Provision of research-based input into policies and the formulation of procompetitive policy such that their effects in the relevant markets are pro-competitive
9. Conduct market inquiries in specific markets with a view to isolate competition concerns in specific sectors for follow-ups by the Restrictive Practice and Mergers Division, in instances where there are reasonable grounds to suspect that there is a restriction or distortion of competition
10. Conduct market surveillance with a view to keep abreast of local, regional and international competition and trade tariffs trends that could effectively inform varied industry statistics, market information or specific scenarios of market analysis
11. Oversee and manage public relations awareness and advocacy programmes
12. Undertake advocacy with policy makers to advocate for procompetitive policies and regulations and advise Gov-ernment on some of the policies or agreements with adverse effect on competition and trade tariff related matters
13. Coordinate the production of analytical papers on competition and trade tariffs matters
14. Developing objectives and strategies to feed into the coiporate Strategic Plan
15. Preparing the Annual report

Qualifications and Experience
1. Honors Degree in Economics
2. Masters’ Degree in Economics/Masters in Competition and Economic Regulation will be an added advantage
3. At least 3 years proven experience in a research or competition or trade tariffs areas
