Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or education do I need to become a Counter Sales Representative at a company like plawnmotors?

Most employers in Zimbabwe require a minimum of five O-Level passes including English and Mathematics. A diploma or certificate in Sales, Marketing, or Business Studies from institutions like Harare Polytechnic or Zimbabwe Open University is advantageous. Previous retail or customer service experience is often preferred even for entry-level positions.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Counter Sales Representative?

You will assist walk-in customers with product inquiries, process sales transactions, and maintain accurate stock records using manual or basic computer systems. Daily tasks include handling cash and mobile money payments, restocking display areas, and resolving customer complaints professionally. You may also support the sales team with quotations and follow-ups on pending orders.

How does workplace culture and employer expectations differ for sales roles in Zimbabwe?

Punctuality and professional appearance are highly valued in Zimbabwean retail environments, with many employers expecting early arrival for stock checks. Hierarchical respect is important—you will report to a supervisor or branch manager and expected to follow established protocols. Building personal relationships with regular customers is often encouraged as it drives repeat business in tight-knit communities.

What career progression opportunities exist for Counter Sales Representatives in Zimbabwe?

With strong performance, you can advance to Senior Sales Representative, Branch Supervisor, or Sales Manager within two to five years. Some employers offer internal training programs or sponsorship for professional courses through the Zimbabwe Institute of Management. Transitioning to external sales, inventory management, or operations roles is also common in automotive and retail sectors.

What benefits should I expect as a full-time Counter Sales Representative?

Standard benefits typically include annual leave days as prescribed by the Labour Act, and some employers offer medical aid contributions or access to company schemes. Pension contributions through NSSA are mandatory, though private pension arrangements vary by employer. Transport or housing allowances are occasionally provided but are not guaranteed in entry-level sales positions.

How do I apply for this role and what do Zimbabwean employers look for in candidates?

Submit a concise CV with a cover letter highlighting customer service experience, either in person or via email as specified in the job advertisement. Employers value honesty, numeracy skills for cash handling, and a clean criminal record due to trust required with stock and money. Prepare for practical assessments such as mock customer interactions or basic arithmetic tests during the interview process.
