The Conservation Monitoring Officer serves as the primary point person at Rainforest Trust for maintaining the integrity of our Key Biodiversity Areas project data, both GIS as well as in our related project database, to enable to consistent and timely monitoring of KBAs. The Officer is responsible for making improvements to the project database to facilitate the application, agreement, monitoring and reporting processes, as well as integrating geospatial data to the extent possible. The Officer also serves as the primary creator of any KBA maps, both static and web-based.

 

Rainforest Trust seeks experienced conservation professional to manage both spatial and non-spatial data to monitor the progress of a growing portfolio of Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) projects across the tropics. Rainforest Trust is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in 1988. Partnering with the most respected conservation organizations in the world’s tropical regions, Rainforest Trust supports the protection of critical habitat for endangered species through local partnership.

 

This position reports to the Science and Monitoring Manager.

 

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Analyzing and reporting on various spatial datasets that demonstrate impact of Rainforest Trust projects for KBAs (e.g. forest cover, species)
  • Managing GIS files and datasets on our server as well as in ArcGIS Online
  • Facilitates the creation of reports/analyses of data from the database (spatial and tabular)
  • Builds functionality for monitoring and evaluation data capture
  • Provides support to both internal and external users of the conservation database

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years experience with GIS analysis and cartography using the ESRI suite
  • Previous experience with relational database design and data analysis
  • Strong analytical and research background
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience developing database systems in FileMaker
  • Experience in data analysis including programming languages such as Python, R and/or SQL
  • Experience estimating carbon storage and emissions avoided numbers
  • Background in conservation science

 

The candidate will work in our central office with 40 staff in Warrenton, Virginia, just 45 minutes west of Washington DC.
