Most employers require a minimum of a diploma or degree in Marketing, Business Studies, or International Trade from institutions like the University of Zimbabwe or Zimbabwe Open University. A professional qualification from ZIMRA or the Chartered Institute of Marketing Zimbabwe strengthens your profile. Experience with customs documentation and Incoterms is highly valued in this field.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of this role?
You will source new clients locally and internationally, negotiate sales contracts, and coordinate with freight forwarders and customs agents for smooth cargo movement. Daily tasks include preparing quotations, tracking shipments, managing client relationships, and ensuring compliance with ZIMRA regulations. You also handle documentation like bills of lading, commercial invoices, and certificates of origin.
How does the work culture and employer expectations differ in Zimbabwe's import-export sector?
Zimbabwean employers expect high flexibility, including early starts and occasional weekend work to align with international time zones. Building personal relationships and trust with clients is essential, as business culture remains relationship-driven. Punctuality, adaptability to economic fluctuations, and resourcefulness with limited infrastructure are highly prized traits.
What career progression opportunities exist for Import & Export Sales Representatives in Zimbabwe?
With proven performance, you can advance to Sales Manager, Country Sales Representative, or Regional Export Manager roles within 3-5 years. Some professionals transition into supply chain management, customs brokerage, or start their own trading companies. Standard packages usually include paid annual leave of 21-30 days, a basic medical aid scheme, and participation in a pension fund such as NSSA or a private scheme. Some employers provide fuel allowances, airtime, or commission structures based on sales targets. Benefits vary significantly by company size and sector, with larger corporates offering more comprehensive packages.
How should I apply and what do Zimbabwean employers specifically look for in candidates?
Submit a concise CV with a cover letter highlighting your sales track record and knowledge of regional trade regulations like SADC and COMESA protocols. Employers prioritize candidates with existing client networks, proficiency in ERP systems, and demonstrated resilience during economic challenges.
