Gender and Nutrition Officers

The purpose of the job is to increase demand, production and consumption of diverse and nutritious foods, to increase nutrition knowledge and awareness on positive nutrition and health behavioral practices in communities while mainstreaming gender in all activites.

  • Duties
    Train district and ward level stakeholders on the Care Group Model and the Gender and Nutrition Nexus;
  • Train health promoters on the Care Group model approach while mainstreaming concepts from the GALs methodology;
  • Facilitate formation of Care Groups;
  • Monitor and support Health promoters,Leadmothers and Neighbour women, Gender champions through home visits and supervision and support visits to Care groups;
  • Train Nutrition facilitators on Healthy Harvest, Post-Harvest Management and Food processing and value addition;
  • Monitor and support nutrition facilitators as they cascade nutrition and gender trainings to farmer groups;
  • Facilitate establishment of food processing associations and community learning centres;
  • Facilitate and support establishment of microgardens,hygiene enabling facilities, rearing of various small livestock at homesteads and establish these at demonstration sites;
  • Facilitate and support establishment of bio fortification demonstration sites in schools and institutions;
  • Facilitate formation of local catering groups which will focus on availing nutritious meals as well as processed bio fortified food products;
  • Monitor and support local caterers and millers to ensure sustained availability of nutritious foods all year round;
  • Conduct nutrition awareness activities to promote production and consumption of nutritious foods including bio fortified foods such as field days, open days, food taste testing fairs and roadshows etc;
  • Conduct review meetings with stakeholders, health promoters and nutrition facilitators to consolidate lessons learnt and recommendations for future programming;
  • Participate in Food and Nutrition Security Committee meetings at ward and district level; Participate in district joint monitoring visits; Conduct exchange visits with farmer groups at intracluster and intercluster level;
  • Consolidate recipes developed by farmers participating in care groups and food processing activities;
  • Coordinate Gender analysis and assessments in the targeted districts;
  • Assess and identify gender knowledge needs and gaps in the INSPIRE project and facilitate capacity development of staff, Government actors and other stakeholders in the project to respond to the needs of women, men boys and girls;
  • Coordinate training activities by Staff, Gender Champions and Community Based Facilitators on gender Action Learning Systems (GALS) methodology to farmers

Key Qualifications And Skills: 

  • Experience in motorcycle riding is a must;
  • At least a first degree in Nutrition;
  • Relevant experience in programme and project monitoring and evaluation;
  • Experience in gender mainstreaming in projects;
  • Ability to perform nutrition assessments on nutritional status of children under 5 years, pregnant and lactating women;
  • Ability to take anthropometric measurements ;
  • Ability to carry out cooking demonstrations on nutritious dishes;
  • Planning, organizing coordination, documentation and communication skills;
  • Team work with conflict management skills.
