Rainforest Trust seeks experienced Conservation Scientist to establish Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) priorities and develop impact metrics and standards for a growing portfolio of protected areas across the tropics.
Rainforest Trust is a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in 1988. Partnering with the most respected conservation organizations in the world’s tropical regions, Rainforest Trust supports the protection of critical habitat for endangered species through local partnership.
The Conservation Scientist supports Rainforest Trust efforts to conduct KBA analyses, interpret results of analyses and publish the findings in the scientific literature. The officer additionally is responsible to enhance the system of indicators to measure progress the conservation of KBAs within Rainforest Trust projects. Finally, the Officer leads the quarterly report on conservation monitoring indicators, using appropriate data visualizations, in collaboration with the Science and Monitoring Manager.
This position reports to the Science and Monitoring Manager.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
- Undertake global biodiversity and KBA analyses to identify priorities for Rainforest Trust project selection
- Conduct scientific analyses using the Rainforest Trust database of more than 30 years of projects and publish these in the scientific literature
- Refine and improve the key conservation indicators and metrics across the organization
- Develop cost-effective means of measuring biological and socio-economic indicators
- Develop experimental design to gauge impact of protected areas
- Produce visualizations of conservation data
Required Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in conservation science or similar field
- Previous experience with program monitoring and evaluation
- Strong analytical and research background
- Track record of publications in the field of conservation
Preferred Skills:
- Data visualization such as Carto or Tableau
- Knowledge of GIS a plus
