Policy frameworks to advance rights of persons with disability are in lace and the Ministry of Public Service Labour and Social Welfare has since established a disability department in the Ministry as well as a National Disabilities board to provide oversight on disability issues in Zimbabwe. There is political willing ness at high levels and the President has recently appointed a special representative in his office to advice on disability issues. Meanwhile there is a thriving Disability People’s Organisations (DPOs) representing all facets of disability.
Most residential houses are single story and allow for easy access to person with disability. Private transport can also be adapted to ensure it is friendly to persons with disability. Many office spaces have both stairways and elevators to ensure physical accessibility.
The ground floor of the UNDP office in Zimbabwe is accessible for persons with disabilities, including offices, bathroom and meeting rooms. There is a fully equipped health facility in the UN Compound manned by a Doctor with all the relevant support staff while external medical services are available through different doctors and health institutions which the UN has partnered.
