ADMINISTRATION ASSISTANT/ DRIVER – TechnoServe

About TechnoServe: Everyone deserves the opportunity to build a better future. This simple idea has been at the heart of TechnoServe’s work around the world for over 50 years. TechnoServe is a pioneer in leveraging the power of business and markets to create sustainable pathways out of poverty. The low-income communities in which we work are full of enterprising people. Their small-scale farms and businesses are the keys to economic development. But they face many challenges: low literacy, lack of access to jobs and markets, unpredictable political dynamics and, increasingly, the effects of climate change. For many women and young people, the challenges are even more daunting. Working with TechnoServe staff, people around the world are lifting themselves out of poverty. The results are amazing…when incomes increase and living conditions for families get better, they are able to access health care and education previously out of reach. Communities and even whole countries are better off.

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or certifications do I need to become an Administration Assistant/Driver in Zimbabwe?

Most employers require a minimum of five O-Level passes including English and Mathematics, plus a clean Class 2 driver's license. A diploma in secretarial studies, business administration, or a relevant certificate from institutions like Polytechnic Colleges or the Zimbabwe School of Administration is highly advantageous. Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and a defensive driving certificate strengthen your application.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of an Administration Assistant/Driver?

You will manage office correspondence, filing, and scheduling appointments while also transporting staff, documents, and supplies to various locations. The role requires balancing desk duties with driving responsibilities, including vehicle maintenance checks and logbook management. Flexibility is essential as you may need to run errands, attend meetings off-site, or assist with event logistics at short notice.

How does workplace culture in Zimbabwe affect this combined role?

Zimbabwean employers value reliability, punctuality, and respect for hierarchy, so reporting structures and protocol matter significantly. The dual nature of this role means you must navigate both office etiquette and professional driving standards, including maintaining a presentable appearance at all times. Building trust through consistent performance is crucial, as drivers often handle sensitive information and confidential matters.

What career progression opportunities exist for Administration Assistants/Drivers in Zimbabwe?

With experience, you can advance to Fleet Manager, Transport Officer, or Senior Administrative roles within larger organizations. Pursuing further qualifications such as a degree in business administration, logistics, or human resources opens doors to management positions. Some professionals transition into specialized fields like procurement, facilities management, or operations coordination.

What benefits should I expect or negotiate for this position?

Standard benefits typically include annual leave as prescribed by the Labour Act, limited medical aid coverage, and pension contributions through NSSA or private schemes. Fuel allowances, vehicle maintenance provisions, and overtime pay for after-hours driving are common negotiation points. Clarify whether the role includes a uniform allowance, airtime for work-related communication, and clarity on personal versus official vehicle use.

How do I apply effectively for Administration Assistant/Driver roles with organizations like TechnoServe?

Submit a concise CV highlighting both administrative competencies and your clean driving record, including references from previous employers who can vouch for both skill sets. Emphasize reliability, local area knowledge, and any experience with NGO or international organization protocols. Prepare for practical assessments such as driving tests, typing speed evaluations, and scenario-based questions on handling confidential information.
