Organization profile

The University of Zimbabwe, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Child and Adolescent Health Unit has a Neonatal Research Group (NRG) that conducts various research in the new-born babies. One of the studies is the Helping Babies Breathe study (HBB), a skills-based curriculum focusing on the basic steps of neonatal resuscitation. HBB decreases early (24-hour) neonatal mortality and stillbirth rates This study will evaluate whether proper implementation of the HBB resuscitation program will result in improvement in both short / long term outcomes in a sample of non-vigorous (not crying) babies requiring resuscitation. The study is being funded by the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Foundation and being conducted in collaboration with American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and University of California San Francisco (UCSF). We would want to monitor with direct observation and video recording delivery room resuscitation practices by health providers with the goal of improving resuscitation practices and the quality of care after birth.

Job description

The position involves video filming of newborn babies immediately after birth including any resuscitation procedures that might take place to help initiation of breathing in those babies who fail to breathe or cry at birth. Direct observation and video filming will be done after obtaining informed written consent from the health care provider and the mother.

Purpose of the position

  • To operate a video camera;
  • A competent camera operator to capture high quality videos in the delivery rooms (labour wards) for the HBB study;
  • To perform video filming on study participants at specified times in the study as per protocol.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Obtaining verbal consent from the participants after research nurse has given detailed study information;
  • Setting up video graphic equipment and prepare camera for the video filming;
  • Capture quality videos in the delivery suites and at the developmental follow up clinic;
  • Maintenance of privacy and confidentiality of the participants;
  • Editing videos and storing them in Google Drive;
  • Ensure video filming is done in compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) for clinical research.

We expect the following qualifications and attributes

  • Diploma or Higher National Diploma in media and filming or relevant field;
  • Proven experience in photography and graphic design;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Ability to think and act quickly and work with minimal supervision;
  • A team player;
  • Females encouraged to apply;
  • Experience working with pregnant women, newborn babies and children will be an added advantage;
  • Ability to work well with others and be a team player;
  • The person to take the videos should be someone with no medical qualification.
