Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do I need to become a SHEQ Officer in Zimbabwe?

Most employers look for a diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field, often from institutions like NUST, Chinhoyi University of Technology, or polytechnic colleges. Recognised certifications such as NEBOSH IGC, IOSH Managing Safely, or a National Certificate/Diploma in Safety Health and Environmental Management are highly valued. A valid driver's licence is often an added advantage for site-based roles.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a SHEQ Officer?

You can expect to conduct workplace inspections and risk assessments, investigate incidents, maintain safety records, and ensure compliance with Zimbabwean legislation such as the Factories and Works Act and the Labour Act. The role also involves delivering toolbox talks and safety training, monitoring environmental compliance, and preparing reports for management. Site walks and enforcing the use of PPE are usually daily activities.

What is the work culture like for SHEQ Officers in Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwean workplaces generally expect SHEQ Officers to be firm but respectful when enforcing safety rules, as workers may sometimes resist compliance. Employers value officers who communicate well in both English and local languages such as Shona or Ndebele, since training sessions often need to reach all staff. Punctuality, thorough record-keeping, and the ability to work under minimal supervision are strongly emphasised.

What career growth can I expect as a SHEQ Officer?

With experience and further certifications like NEBOSH Diploma or ISO 45001/14001 lead auditor qualifications, you can progress to roles such as Senior SHEQ Officer, SHEQ Manager, or HSE Consultant. Some officers move into specialised areas like environmental management, mining safety under the Mines and Minerals Act, or occupational health. Gaining registration with professional bodies such as SAIOSH or IOSH strengthens your progression prospects.

What benefits do SHEQ Officers typically receive in Zimbabwe?

Benefits vary by employer but commonly include paid annual leave, medical aid contributions (often with providers like CIMAS, First Mutual, or PSMAS), and pension contributions under NSSA plus any company scheme. Some employers also offer transport allowances, airtime allowances, or performance bonuses. Always clarify the full benefits package during the interview stage.

How do I apply for a SHEQ Officer position and what do employers look for?

Applications are typically submitted via email or company career portals with a CV, cover letter, and certified copies of your certificates, so tailor your CV to highlight relevant certifications and site experience. Employers look for practical knowledge of Zimbabwean OHS legislation, incident investigation experience, and strong reporting skills. Demonstrating familiarity with ISO standards and showing a proactive attitude toward safety culture will set you apart.
