We are an established farming organization seeking to recruit a suitably qualified and experienced candidate for the role Section Manager in our Flowers Division.
JOB PURPOSE:
The position exists to drive business growth by ensuring that the company meets agreed targets in terms of production and profitability through the provision of cut flowers to our various market channels. This is done by managing all activities in the fields including general field management, quality control, human resource management, harvesting and transportation of product.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Flower Production
· Assist in the coordination of all field activities pertaining to flower production. Coordinate flower planting and ensure that sections of the field have been prepared and allocated accordingly in line with the respective planned activities.
· Ensure that the transplanting and planting standards and procedures are being followed by all staff.
· Monitor flower growth and ensure that those tending to the flowers are following all flower care guidelines and routine practices.
· Account for all flowers in the field and ensure that these tally with targets that have been set.
· Responsible for calibrating nutrient requirements in the soils etc. to ensure that flower growth is adequately supported.
2. Resource Management
· Ensure that resources are available for the day to day running of the business operations.
· Make sure that resources are used economically i.e. application of fertilizers and chemicals that are used to spray the flowers as well as the availability of implements.
· Responsible for ensuring chemical and fertilizer levels are maintained at sufficient levels to support operations.
3. Quality Maintenance
· Ensure that flower protection policies are adhered to so as to ensure that product quality is as per standard, it is also therefore important to ensure that flower growth rates /quality is regularly checked so that threats to quality are detected ASAP.
· Ensure that staff is aware of flower care processes and procedures, so as to ensure that flowers grow straight and are propped for support.
· Take note of quality feedback from the clients and ensure issues highlighted are rectified.
4. Flower Storage & Packaging
· Ensure that the cold rooms are maintained at the correct temperatures and that flowers are not stored in a way that could negatively impact on quality.
· Ensure that the cold room is clean at all times to avoid any potential pests / hazards from affecting the product.
· Ensure that packaging standards are followed by all staff e.g. even length of flowers.
· Ensure that adequate packaging is always available for projected loads and monitor packing levels (according to season) for proactive ordering.
· When the flowers are being transported communicate with the transport company and check the temperature of the vehicles so as to ensure flowers are not damaged or quality is not affected resulting in disposal of the product.
5. Reporting on Operations
· Ensure that all operational data is captured in the appropriate manner by making sure that the flower clerk and farm statistical team have produced the weekly reports on time and data is accurate for presentation.
· Ensure that all delivery notes off farm are produced accurately and circulated to the necessary people as and when flowers are dispatched from the farm.
6. Human Resource Management
· Ensure that there is adequate labour to carry out all field activities.
· Ensure that labour costs are in line with budgeted projections.
· Ensure that all labour are wearing the required protective clothing when carrying out their duties and will liaise with the Stores and Admin Officer in this regard.
· Allocate duties and targets on a daily basis and ensure that all processes are adequately resourced in order to meet production targets.
· Responsible for disciplining subordinates when necessary.
7. Health and Safety
· Ensure that safety practices are adhered to both at work and the farm village. This is done through demonstrations and meetings whereby safety issues are discussed.
8. Communication
· Manage relations with all key stake holders, the local community, regulatory authorities and staff for the benefit of the business.
9. You will also be required to attend to any other duties that may, from time to time, be prescribed by the General Manager & other Directors. i.e. duties for other business units

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
• A Diploma or Degree in Agriculture
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar position

COMPUTER PROFICIENCY
• Computer literate in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Sage Evolution
