RESPECT – RESPONSIBLE CRITICAL THINKING FOR HUMAN RIGHTS OF MARGINALISED GROUPS
Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences, in partnership with Lund University, Sweden, seek qualified candidates dedicated to carry out researches that advances the human rights and interests of marginalised communities.
ABOUT RESPECT
RESPECT (Responsible Critical Thinking) for human rights of marginalised groups is a one-year collaborative project between Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences (MSUAS) in Zimbabwe and Lund University (LU) in Sweden. In relation to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal Target 16.7 which relates to ensuring responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels, the project is aimed at promoting democratic development and social justice for marginalised groups in Zimbabwe through relevant research. RESPECT is funded by the Swedish Institute (2025-2026) and is aimed at strengthening institutional research capacity in addressing the interests and human rights of marginalised communities.
What is “human rights” and who is marginalised? “Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings… [and] include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education and many more. Everyone is entitled to these rights, without discrimination” (United Nations). Marginalised groups are defined as individuals/communities who are excluded from the society, i.e. they are “disempowered and discriminated against in law, policy and practice, resulting in inequalities in both opportunities and outcomes” (United Nations, 2017, p.18 ). These include women, particular ethnicities/minorities, people with disabilities and mental health problems, migrants, refugees, stateless and displaced persons, children, youth, older persons, slum dwellers, people living with HIV/Aids, and other vulnerable groups.
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR FIELDWORK
A total of 20 postgraduate projects will be financially supported for fieldwork of relevance to human rights of marginalised groups in Zimbabwe. Funding will be awarded to MSUAS master’s students and MSUAS academic staff meeting the eligibility criteria. To be eligible, applicants must fulfill the following:
For Master’s students:

Be admitted to the Master of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management degree or any other relevant Masters Degree.

Have developed a research concept or proposal related to the interests and rights of marginalised groups.

Provide a letter of endorsement from their proposed or current academic supervisor.
For Academic staff:

Be admitted to a Master’s or PhD programme at a recognised institution.

Provide evidence that their research addresses the human rights of marginalised groups.

Provide a letter of endorsement from MSUAS, confirming alignment with staff development criteria.
