QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate must:
Be a holder of an Honours degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent;
Have a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Information Technology or equivalent;
Proven research interest in Natural Language Processing (NLP)/Computational Linguistics/Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning/Data Science; and
A PhD/DPhil degree or demonstrable progress towards attaining a doctoral degree would be an added advantage.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be expected to work and deliver research results in a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional environment with multiple teams that will include linguistics, language and other domain experts. Collectively, the research collaborators will be building language resources to enhance the digital vitality of Zimbabwean languages. The specific tasks of the Research Fellow will include:
Developing language technology applications and digital tools, and building basic language resource kits (BLARKs) for indigenous languages;
Creating, developing and maintaining indigenous language digital datasets (text, sound and image) including corpora, thesauri, dictionaries and online encyclopaedias;
Application and use of data science methods and techniques including machine learning;
Software development using appropriate methods and programming languages, Web and mobile technologies, data and knowledge-bases and Cloud Computing environments;
Supporting advanced computational linguistics tasks such as semantic search, machine language translation, text-to-speech and speech-to-text conversions, and machine and human conversations;
Investigating approaches, methods, and algorithms for basic language tools such as spelling, grammar and style checkers in order to support NLP for text, audio and video content;
Incorporation and deployment of such tools into document processing tools on Desktop, Mobile and Web platforms; and
Supervising ICT digital technicians and junior systems developers.
