The CHIEDZA Trial
CHIEDZA stands for: Community based interventions to improve HIV outcomes in youth, a cluster randomized trial in Zimbabwe. It is funded by the Wellcome Trust. The trial is being conducted in three provinces of Harare, Bulawayo and Mashonaland East. Twenty-four clusters were randomized 1:1 to the community-based intervention or Standard of care arm.
The intervention consists of HIV and SRH services provided by the CHIEDZA team at a fixed community-based venue with periodic mobile outreach (CHIEDZA). Four clusters were randomized to the intervention arm in each province. A team is based in each province and provides services one day per week per cluster. The target population is individuals aged 16-24 years old. The intervention is implemented over a two-year period in each cluster, with the start of the intervention staggered in three-month intervals. In the second year, a comprehensive STI testing and management service will be introduced in the intervention arm in Harare and Bulawayo (STICH).
