Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications and certifications are typically required for the Professional Assistant to Auditor General role in Zimbabwe?

A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Auditing, or Public Administration from a Zimbabwean university or equivalent accredited institution is essential. Professional certification such as ACCA, ZICA (Zimbabwe Institute of Chartered Accountants), or CA(Z) is highly preferred, and candidates must be registered with ZICA if practising in an auditing capacity. Some roles may require completion of the Public Service Commission’s induction or refresher training for public sector finance staff.

What does a typical day look like for a Professional Assistant to the Auditor General in Zimbabwe?

Daily tasks include preparing audit documentation, coordinating fieldwork logistics for audit teams, drafting correspondence and reports in line with the Audit Act [Chapter 22:03], and supporting compliance with the Public Finance Management Act. You’ll liaise with government ministries and local authorities, manage filing systems aligned with National Archives of Zimbabwe standards, and attend inter-departmental meetings at Harare or provincial offices.

How would you describe the work culture and expectations in the Office of the Auditor General in Zimbabwe?

The office operates under strict adherence to public service ethics, transparency, and constitutional accountability — punctuality, formal communication, and discretion are non-negotiable. Hierarchical respect is observed, but collaborative problem-solving is encouraged, especially during joint audits with entities like the Anti-Corruption Commission or Treasury. Attendance at mandatory ethics and anti-corruption workshops, as required by the Public Service Commission, is expected annually.

What realistic career progression paths exist after working as a Professional Assistant to the Auditor General in Zimbabwe?

With experience and further professional certification, officers often progress to Senior Professional Assistant, then Audit Officer or Internal Audit Manager within the Office or other line ministries. Some transition into leadership roles in provincial audit units or take up secondments with international bodies like the African Union’s Panel of External Auditors. Continued performance may also support nomination for postgraduate scholarships under the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education’s public service development programmes.

What benefits — such as leave, medical aid, and pension — can I expect in this role?

Employees are covered under the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) pension scheme and entitled to 30 days’ annual leave, 12 days’ sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave per the Labour Act and Public Service Regulations. Medical aid is provided through the Government Medical Aid Scheme (GMAS), which covers dependants and includes access to designated public hospitals and some private facilities on referral. Housing and transport allowances vary depending on grade and location, and are administered per the Public Service Commission’s conditions of service.

How do I apply for this role, and what do employers in Zimbabwe specifically look for in candidates?

Applications are submitted via the Public Service Commission’s online portal or hand-delivered to the Office of the Auditor General in Harare, accompanied by certified academic and professional certificates, ZIMRA tax clearance, and a police clearance certificate. Employers prioritise integrity, demonstrated knowledge of Zimbabwe’s financial legislation (e.g., PFMA, Audit Act), and evidence of administrative competence — referees must be verifiable and preferably from public sector institutions. Shortlisted candidates undergo competency-based interviews and may be required to complete a written test on public finance principles.
