The post of Pro-Vice Chancellor at Harare Institute of Technology calls for an outstanding forward-thinking candidate to assume overall responsibility for commercialisation of research, development and innovation outputs for the University. The Pro-Vice Chancellor reports to the Vice Chancellor.

Duties and Responsibilities

This role brings together the critical functions of commercialisation, research, innovation, leadership and the identification and establishment of wide ranging strategy of local and global partnerships. The Pro-Vice Chancellor is expected to help position HIT on the international stage and deliver opportunities for the development, incubation, transfer and commercialisation of technology with like-minded institutions globally. S/he should be able to:
• Work as a key member of the University’s executive leadership team, playing a pivotal role in the development and implementation of the University’s Strategic Plan;
• Develop and implement coherent commercialisation strategics and policies; deliver consistent improvements in the University’s effectiveness and impact of its knowledge, technology and skills transfer, commercialisation as well as consultancy activities;
Ensure that the University meets the key performance indicators relating to industry and commerce engagement, innovation and commercialisation of intellectual outputs that are set out in its Strategic Plan and the National Development Priorities.
• Provide strategic leadership for the development of a culture, policies and processes that support the increase of grant income, and diversification of research funding;
• Lead in the development of a culture, policies and practices that encourage and facilitate the translation of the University’s research into technological outputs that support the country’s Modernisation and Industrialisation Agenda;
• Provide the necessary and fit-for-purposc infrastructure and resources to support research, innovation and commercialisation as well as the maintenance and enhancement of quality;
• Chair relevant sub-committees as directed by the Vice Chancellor;
• Draw up and manage the innovation and commercialisation budget;
• Compile and submit quarterly and annual research, innovation d commercialisation outputs reports for the various stakeholders;
• Execute any other duties as maybe directed by the Vice Chancellor;

Key qualifications, competencies and attributes required
• An earned Research Doctorate (DTech, PhD. DEng);
• Demonstrate experience in commercialisation of ideas including the management of either a Science Park, High-Tech Development Valley or an Incubation Hub;
• Strategic thinking skills and capacity to appreciate and deliver on the University’s Destiny, Cause and Calling;
• Strong research and strategic innovation business skills;
• Capacity to create wealth from the University’s Research, Innovation and Commercialisation thrust;
• Capacity to appreciate the linkages between the University’s academic, research and development activities to the innovation and commercialisation enterprise;
• Excellent business negotiation skills;
• Results-oriented performance;
• Capacity to operate as a team player;
• Demonstrable passion and commitment to innovation and commercialisation of research outputs.
