Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications and certifications are typically required for a PHHE Facilitator role in Zimbabwe?

Most employers require a diploma or degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, or Water and Sanitation. A certificate in Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) or Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) is highly advantageous. Registration with the Health Professions Authority of Zimbabwe strengthens your application.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a PHHE Facilitator?

You will conduct community training sessions on hygiene promotion and sanitation practices across rural and peri-urban areas. Fieldwork involves mobilizing communities, facilitating participatory learning sessions, and monitoring WASH project indicators. Regular reporting to district offices and coordination with local health authorities are also core duties.

How does the work culture and environment differ for WASH roles in Zimbabwe?

Expect extensive travel to remote communities, often using public transport or 4x4 vehicles on poor road infrastructure. Zimbabwean NGOs emphasize community participation and respect for local leadership structures, including traditional chiefs and village health workers. Punctuality and adaptability are valued, as field conditions can change rapidly due to weather or resource constraints.

What career progression opportunities exist for PHHE Facilitators in Zimbabwe?

With experience, you can advance to WASH Officer, Project Coordinator, or Programme Manager positions within NGOs or UN agencies. Specializing in emergency WASH response opens doors to international humanitarian roles. Some facilitators transition into government positions as Environmental Health Officers or district-level health coordinators.

What benefits are typically offered for full-time WASH facilitator positions in Zimbabwe?

Standard packages usually include medical aid cover, pension contributions, and annual leave entitlements aligned with Zimbabwe's Labour Act. Field-based roles often provide travel allowances, subsistence allowances, and communication reimbursements. Specific benefits vary by employer and funding availability.

What do Zimbabwean employers look for in PHHE Facilitator applications?

Employers prioritize demonstrated community mobilization experience and fluency in local languages such as Shona or Ndebele. A well-crafted CV highlighting measurable hygiene behavior change outcomes, plus a concise cover letter explaining your motivation for WASH work, significantly improves your chances. Include reference letters from previous community-based roles or volunteer positions.
