Report to : Chief Medical Research Officer

Position Profile:

The Health Systems Strengthening Researcher (HSSR) will work at the National Institute of Health Research. The post holder is supposed to have knowledge about and experience of designing research projects and writing grant funding proposals in key thematic areas of HSSR including provision of health services, health education and medical training, health information and health governance and financing.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and conduct of qualitative and quantitative research alongside the other researchers and investigators.
• Assessing health services and communities, determining health needs, and integrating research findings and data analysis in the development of health system programs and initiatives.
• Evaluating quality of healthcare services and delivery methods, healthcare programs and providing evidence based advice on standards of care, and policies.
• Collaborating with healthcare professionals, government departments, and communities on health system development and implementation.
• Evaluating implementing health education and preventative care programs.
• Conduct data analysis and participate in data validation workshops as appropriate.
• Leverage existing networks to maximise the uptake, application and generalizability of the research findings and tools to translate research into practice.

Required qualifications

Minimum qualification:

• Candidate should have a Master’s degree in Health Economics, Health Systems or Social Sciences.
• A PhD in Health Economics, Health Systems or Public Health will be an added advantage.

Preferred Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Strong foundation in quantitative and/or qualitative research methods and a broad understanding of health care systems and health policy issues.
• Expertise in health equity and social determinants of health frameworks; experience with cross-sectional health equity data and metrics; strong understanding of intersectionality of social categorizations and its relationship to health inequities.
• Work experience in health services research, public health, public policy, economics, social sciences, data science, social work, or other relevant discipline.
• Knowledge of and experience with community-based participatory research.
• Technical expertise in one or more of the following areas: policy reform, service coverage, supply chain management, information systems, workforce alignment and/or related areas of health system strengthening.
• Experience of writing and delivering workshops, seminars and lectures on health systems, health education and/or health services.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, time management, demonstrated leadership and good management ability.
• Computer literate in Word, Excel, PowerPoint
