Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or certifications are typically required for a Loss Controller or Loss Control Assistant role in Zimbabwe’s power sector?

A minimum of a National Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Security Management, Risk Management, or a related field is commonly required. Relevant certifications such as the Zimbabwe Institute of Security and Risk Management (ZISRM) Certificate or ISO 31000 awareness training are highly valued. Prior experience in industrial security, especially within energy infrastructure like power stations, strengthens applications.

What does a typical day look like for a Loss Control Assistant at Hwange Power Station or Sherwood B?

Daily duties include conducting site patrols, inspecting access control points, monitoring CCTV systems, documenting security incidents, and supporting investigations into theft, vandalism, or safety breaches. You’ll liaise with plant operations staff, maintain incident logs per ZESA’s internal protocols, and participate in weekly security briefings aligned with national critical infrastructure protection guidelines.

How does workplace culture and employer expectations differ for security roles in Zimbabwe compared to other countries?

Zimbabwean employers place strong emphasis on loyalty, punctuality, discretion, and respect for hierarchy—especially in state-linked entities like ZESA Holdings. Teamwork and adaptability are essential due to frequent resource constraints, and fluency in local languages (e.g., Ndebele at Hwange or Shona in many areas) is often an unspoken advantage during daily interactions.

What career progression opportunities exist for Loss Control staff within ZESA or similar Zimbabwean utilities?

With consistent performance and further certification (e.g., Advanced Security Management or OHS qualifications), staff may progress to Senior Loss Controller, Security Supervisor, or transition into Health & Safety or Asset Protection roles. Some move into internal audit or compliance units, particularly if they pursue professional development through institutions like the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE) or ZISRM.

What benefits—such as leave, medical aid, or pension—are typically offered to Loss Control staff employed by ZESA Holdings?

Employees are generally covered under the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) pension scheme and receive statutory annual leave (22 days), sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave per Zimbabwean labour law. Medical aid is usually provided through ZESA’s group scheme with approved providers like MASA or Zimnat, though coverage levels depend on grade and tenure.

How should I apply for this role, and what do Zimbabwean employers like ZESA specifically look for in candidates?

Applications must be submitted via ZESA’s official careers portal or designated email, accompanied by certified academic documents, police clearance, and a detailed CV highlighting security experience in critical infrastructure. Employers prioritise verified work history, integrity references, physical fitness (often assessed via basic medicals), and demonstrated understanding of Zimbabwe’s Public Order and Security Act (POSA) and relevant utility regulations.
