Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or certifications are typically required for this role in Zimbabwe's non-profit sector?

A bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Development Studies, International Relations, or a related field is standard; many employers prefer a master’s degree or postgraduate diploma in Strategic Management or Partnership Development. Professional certifications such as the Certificate in Partnership Management (CPM) or PRINCE2 Foundation are increasingly valued, especially when combined with local experience in donor-funded programmes.

What does a typical day look like for someone in this role working remotely from Zimbabwe?

Day-to-day tasks include coordinating virtual partnership meetings with international NGOs and local CSOs, drafting MoUs aligned with Zimbabwean regulatory requirements (e.g., NAC registration), and reporting to donors using formats accepted by ZIMRA and the Ministry of Public Service. Time zone flexibility is expected, but responsiveness during core Southern African business hours (08:00–17:00 CAT) is essential due to coordination with regional and global stakeholders.

How does Zimbabwean work culture influence expectations for this remote leadership role?

Respect for hierarchy and formal communication remains important — emails and proposals often require respectful salutations and clear attribution of authority, especially when engaging government entities or traditional leaders. Relationship-building through consistent follow-up and face-to-face engagement (where feasible) is highly valued, reflecting Zimbabwe’s emphasis on trust and personal rapport in partnership development.

What realistic career progression paths exist for this role within Zimbabwe’s development sector?

Successful performers often advance to Country Director or Regional Partnerships Lead roles with INGOs operating in SADC, or transition into advisory positions with government agencies like the National Economic Council. Some move into consultancy, leveraging their networks and experience to support local CSOs in accessing EU, UN, or AfDB funding — though sustained growth usually requires demonstrated success in mobilising multi-year, locally led partnerships.

What benefits can I realistically expect from employers offering this role in Zimbabwe?

Standard benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, medical aid coverage through providers like NSSA-accredited schemes (e.g., MSA or Medshield Zimbabwe), and pension contributions under the NSSA Pension Scheme or a private fund compliant with the Pension Funds Act. Remote workers may receive limited home-office allowances, but these vary significantly by employer and are rarely formalised in employment contracts.

How should I apply, and what do Zimbabwean employers specifically look for in candidates for this role?

Applications must include a tailored CV highlighting measurable partnership outcomes (e.g., 'secured 3 new local CSO alliances for climate resilience programming') and a cover letter referencing Zimbabwe-specific contexts like the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) or local donor priorities. Employers prioritise fluency in English, proven experience navigating Zimbabwe’s NGO regulatory environment (e.g., NAC compliance), and evidence of cross-cultural negotiation — references from Zimbabwe-based partners carry significant weight.
