Organization Name: USAP Community School / Education Matters. Job Title: Head of School. Role Purpose: The Head of School is key to the school’s overall mission: overseeing its operations, working closely with the Director of Education Matters and the Board of Directors of Education Matters Africa Foundation to ensure that USAPCS’s daily operations, finances, systems, policies and procedures support the school’s vision of delivering a top-quality education to disadvantaged students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and supervise a faculty of committed and talented teachers to execute the school curricula by providing instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in accomplishing instructional goals
  • Develop school budgets and manage PnLs together with the Finance Manager, regularly reporting to the Director of Education Matters and Board and maintaining fiscal responsibility of the school budget
  • Directly supervise non-teaching staff to oversee operations and smooth running of school and the estate, including procurement of food and supplies, transportation, maintenance, security etc
  • Develop systems, policies, and procedures to strengthen school culture
  • Oversee teacher quality of instruction and provide continuous growth-minded feedback
  • Oversee the extracurricular program of activities and student wellbeing, including but not limited to sports, clubs, field trips, work program, student representative council, mental health and wellness programming.
  • Lead, with the Director, the admission and enrollment of students in line with USAPCS vision and values
  • Manage health and emergency situations and incidents in line with school policies and procedures, ensuring health and safety of staff and students at all times
  • Interview, select, and orient new staff and personnel assigned to campus
  • Maintain and lift morale of faculty and staff, defining clear expectations for performance with regard to instructional strategies, classroom management, and communication
  • Observe employee performance, record observations, conduct evaluation conferences with staff and assign and promote campus personnel
  • Develop and implement a plan for professional teacher development
  • Represent the school in select donor engagement activities in collaboration with the Director and Board of Directors
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with local leaders and institutions
  • Be an exemplar champion and model of the mission and vision with internal and external community & stakeholders to guide USAPCS into its next phase of development
  • Serve as a leading school representative in relevant local meetings to articulate the school’s vision, Quaker identity and values and increase visibility and awareness to solicit support in realizing the mission
  • Identify, analyze and incorporate educational best practices that promote academic excellence and rigor within a residential boarding school setting
  • Work with Director to complete and maintain Cambridge School accreditation
  • Foster robust engagement and partnerships with peer schools (and aspirational peer schools!) both within Zimbabwe and internationally
  • Provide leadership in all areas that is in line with the school values of Equality, Service, Curiosity and Integrity

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an education, social work, STEM or social science related field
  • Masters degree or post-graduate qualification is highly desirable, especially if concerning education
  • Experience working in a school/university setting, especially experience in a Zimbabwean/African school is preferable
  • Experience managing a diverse range of people in demanding work settings
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Google Sheets / Microsoft Excel, WhatsApp with ability to learn and utilize innovative software and applications is desirable
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Financial management skills and experience creating and/or overseeing a budget and financial statements
  • Commitment to the school mission of providing opportunities to disadvantaged students; results-driven mindset and willingness to do whatever it takes to drive student success
  • Exceptional organizational skills and time-management are a must; ability to do self-directed work with limited supervision is important
  • Ability to manage work/life balance without the confines of a 9:5 job
