Position title: Education & Health Programme officer (3)
Working location: Shamva; Wedza; Bulawayo
Supervisor: Family Strengthening Program Coordinator
Established in 1949, SOS Children’s Villages International (CVI) is a dynamic, international social development organization working globally to meet the needs and protect the interests and rights of children without parental care and those who are at the risk of losing it.
SOS Children’s Villages Association of Zimbabwe is a member of SOS International – a worldwide children’s social welfare organisation, providing vulnerable children without homes with a family home and educational opportunities as well as strengthening families to reduce poverty.
Key performance areas and main responsibilities:
- Facilitate the formation and development of Community health and education support Task Force to spearhead education and health activities;
- Support the preparation of community development plans in relation to health and education
- Support Community Task Forces in the identification of programme participants for health and education support.
- Reviewing and submitting to the Admissions Committee the programme participants received from Community Task Forces.
- Facilitate the identification of opportunities and mobilization of local resources for the health and education action plan to meet the needs of each child, household and community.
- Support the preparation of community and individualized health and education support in the family development plans.
- Facilitate participatory monitoring and evaluation of the community empowerment interventions.
- Participates and provides input into the FS programme health and education budgets
- Support Community Task Force, families and communities in the assessment of root causes leading to child abandonment at family and community levels through use of appropriate participatory tools.
- Supports and capacitates communities to develop emergency preparedness plans related to education and health.
- Facilitates Children’s, Youth & Caregiver access to Health and Educational services
- Organise regular nutritional assessment of children and facilitates the provision of medical and supplementary nutritional support for malnourished children
- Organise training of community home based care support groups and nutritional training sessions for caregivers and children in the programme;
- Facilitate children and caregivers access to ART/TB treatment services;
- Facilitate formation of child and adult support groups for children and caregivers living with terminally disease;
- Lobby government medical schemes for children, young people and caregivers on the programme;
- Organise HIV and AIDS awareness creation campaigns among the supported households and programme catchment communities;
- Undertake monitoring visits to school, tertiary and vocational education Institutions to assess performance of children and young people supported by the program
- Facilitate programme participants/caregivers access to adult literacy services
- Consolidates Family Development Plans and preparation of budgets relevant to the attainment of programme’s goal in health and education.
- Documents, prepare and submit timely progress reports to the Project Coordinator on Education & Health related interventions.
- Support the collection and documentation of Education and Health initiatives impact stories
- Collaborate with community development structures, other NGOs and government departments for effective health and education service delivery to programme participants.
- Support the functional sustainability of community based education and health networks on OVC support and other relevant development initiatives.
Qualifications and Technical Competencies
- Degree in community nursing, Public Health, Education, and Rural Development related social and natural sciences/disciplines.
- At least four years’ experience in working with education and health programmes.
- Valid Class 4 Driver’s License and ability to ride a Motorcycle (Class 3) is a requirement.
- Skills & Knowledge
- Sound understanding of child rights, child development, family and community development, rights based programming and management of CBPs.
- Good communication and reporting skills, computer literate, understanding and ability to apply community development participatory methodologies, self-starter
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, within and outside the organisation, develop effective working relationships to deliver outstanding results.
- Knowledge of the Project cycle management demonstrable ability with applying project management methodology to basic or routine projects to achieve stated objectives and/or outcomes
- Demonstrates initiative and enterprise and supports others to work more effectively
- Understands and SOS CV social, ethical and organisational standards and responsibilities in all interactions
- Willingness to travel to and be posted in any SOS program locations according to programming requirements.
