GALZ is an association of LGBTIQ+ people in Zimbabwe, established in 1990 to represent, promote and protect the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer persons in as equal citizens in Zimbabwe. GALZ provides psychosocial support, legal aid, medical referrals, primary health assistance, information resources, social activities, lobbying, advocacy and safe spaces for LGBTIQ+ persons.

Job summary

GALZ invites applications from suitably qualified and motivated persons to fill the positions of Counsellor who will Organize and coordinate the delivery of counselling and psycho-social support services to LGBTIQ+ individuals, group and family members and HIV testing to clients, engagement of partners and stakeholders for effective support to GALZ services.

Main duties and responsibility

  • Provide Counselling services to individual, group and family, Pre and post HIV testing clients;
  • Coordinate, support, supervise & account for implementation activities at local level;
  • Participate / assist in facilitating trainings and workshops and support group meetings;
  • Mobilise local support for GALZ activities from partners and stakeholders;
  • Develop and implement work plans for specific service delivery tasks;
  • Conduct research and documentation of LGBTQ+ human rights violation cases ensuring timely and thorough documentation of such cases;
  • Identify and assess client needs for psychosocial support, provide appropriate supportive counselling, referrals and follow up;
  • Ensure maintenance of an updated database of visitors and case files for all clients on GALZ database systems;
  • Refer participants to other resource centres when necessary;
  • Produce and submit activity, monthly and other reports on implementation of approved service delivery plan to the Programme Lead Counselling & PSS;
  • Any other duties as assigned for effective GALZ response to identified needs of LGBT+ and emergencies.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences and Certificate in counselling;
  • Driver’s licence;
  • Knowledgeable about MSM / WSW / LGBTIQ+;
  • Open mindedness, Non-judgmental, trustworthiness and empathy;
  • Good interpersonal, communication and mobilization skills.
