CALL FOR PUBLIC NOMINATIONS FOR PERSONS TO SERVE ON THE ZIMBABWE GENDER COMMISSION

 

 

The Committee on Standing Rules and Orders (CSRO) of the Parliament of Zimbabwe is mandated in terms of section 237(1) (b) of the Constitution, to invite the public to nominate candidates for possible appointment by His Excellency, the President of Zimbabwe, to serve as Commissioners on Independent Commissions.

The term of office for the current Commissioners of the Zimbabwe Gender Commission will soon expire, resulting in six (6) vacancies. In light of this, the Committee on Standing Rules and Orders (CSRO) invites the public to submit nominations for individuals to be considered for possible appointment to the Commission.

The functions of the Commission and the person specifications are outlined below.

 

 

  1. ZIMBABWE GENDER COMMISSION

 

 

Functions of the Zimbabwe Gender Commission in terms of section 246 of the Constitution and the Zimbabwe Gender Commission Act (Chapter 10:31).

 

 

The Zimbabwe Gender Commission has the following functions:-

 

(a) to monitor issues concerning gender equality to ensure gender equality as provided in the Constitution;
(b) to investigate possible violations of rights relating to gender;
(c) to receive and consider complaints from the public and to take such action in regard to the complaints as it considers appropriate;
(d) to conduct research into issues relating to gender and social justice, and to recommend changes to laws and practices which lead to discrimination based on gender;
(e) to advise public and private institutions on steps to be taken to ensure gender equality;
(f) to recommend affirmative action programmes to achieve gender equality;
(g) to recommend prosecution for criminal violations of rights relating to gender;
(h) to secure appropriate redress where rights relating to gender have been violated; and
(i) to do everything necessary to promote gender equality.
(j) to conduct investigations in accordance with the Zimbabwe Gender Commission Act (Chapter 10:31).
(k) To convene and host the Gender Forum, and to undertake any other activities as required or permitted under the Zimbabwe Gender Commission Act (Chapter 10:31) or any other relevant legislation.

 

 

Person Specification for appointment to the Commission

 

 

Individuals eligible for appointment to the Commission must meet the following criteria:

 

 

  1. Demonstrate a strong ethical foundation and integrity in both professional and personal conduct.
  2. Possess a comprehensive understanding of gender issues across social, cultural, economic, and political spheres.
  3. Exhibit a clear and demonstrable commitment to promoting gender equality and the rights of women and marginalized groups.
  4. Must not be a member of two or more other statutory bodies.
  5. Must be a citizen of Zimbabwe and ordinarily resident in Zimbabwe.
  6. Must not have been sentenced in any country to a term of imprisonment imposed with or without the option of a fine, whether or not any portion thereof has been suspended, and has not received a fine pardon, within the period of five years immediately preceding his or her proposed appointment.
  7. Must not have been adjudged or otherwise declared insolvent or bankrupt, and has not been rehabilitated or discharged.
  8. Must not be a Member of Parliament, or a member of a provincial or metropolitan council, local authority, or any governing council or entity.
