Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do I need to apply for a Tax & Advisory attachee position at BDO Zimbabwe?

You typically need to be pursuing or have completed a degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from a recognized Zimbabwean university such as the University of Zimbabwe or NUST. Part-completion of professional qualifications like ACCA, CIMA, or ICAZ is highly advantageous. Strong grades in taxation and financial reporting modules will strengthen your application.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Tax & Advisory attachee?

You will assist senior staff with tax return preparation, client file organization, and research on Zimbabwean tax legislation including ZIMRA compliance requirements. You may also shadow advisory meetings, draft correspondence, and support audit preparation for corporate clients. Expect significant data entry and spreadsheet work using tools like Excel and accounting software.

How does the work culture differ for interns at Zimbabwean professional services firms?

Zimbabwean firms like BDO maintain a formal, hierarchical structure where punctuality and professional dress are strictly enforced. You will be expected to show deference to partners and managers while demonstrating initiative during quieter periods. Networking through professional bodies such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe is encouraged and often essential for retention.

What career progression paths are available after completing a Tax & Advisory internship?

Successful attachees may be offered graduate trainee contracts leading to full audit or tax consultant roles upon completing professional exams. Long-term paths include specialization in transfer pricing, corporate tax advisory, or partnership track for those who qualify as chartered accountants. Some professionals transition into industry finance roles or ZIMRA positions with the experience gained.

What benefits should I expect as an attachee at a Zimbabwean accounting firm?

Internship benefits vary by employer but typically include a modest stipend rather than a full salary, with no guaranteed medical aid or pension contributions. Some larger firms provide study leave for professional exams and subsidized lunch. Always clarify these terms during your interview, as practices differ significantly across Zimbabwe's professional services sector.

How should I prepare my application and what do Zimbabwean employers prioritize?

Submit a concise CV highlighting any accounting coursework, Excel proficiency, and relevant vacation work, accompanied by a tailored cover letter demonstrating knowledge of Zimbabwe's tax environment. Employers prioritize candidates who show commitment to completing professional qualifications and have clean academic records with no outstanding arrears. Prepare for technical questions on basic tax concepts and current ZIMRA regulations during interviews.
