Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications or certifications are typically required for an Accounting Intern role at Zimbabwean parastatals like ZimParks?

A minimum of a Diploma in Accounting, Finance, or Business Studies from a ZIMCHE-registered institution is usually required; some interns hold or are pursuing ACCA, CIMA, or ZICA qualifications, which are highly regarded locally. Relevant short courses in SAGE Pastel or QuickBooks—commonly used in Zimbabwean public sector finance—are also advantageous.

What does a typical day look like for an Accounting Intern at ZimParks?

Interns often assist with processing supplier payments, reconciling bank statements, maintaining petty cash records, and supporting month-end closing under supervision. Tasks align with Zimbabwe’s Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) requirements, so accuracy, documentation, and adherence to internal controls are emphasised daily.

How does the work culture and professional expectations differ for accounting interns in Zimbabwe compared to other countries?

Zimbabwean public sector internships value respect for hierarchy, punctuality, and formal communication—especially in written correspondence and reporting. Dress code tends to be smart-casual or business attire, and interns are expected to proactively seek guidance while demonstrating integrity in handling financial data amid resource constraints.

What realistic career progression can an Accounting Intern expect after completing the internship with a parastatal like ZimParks?

Strong performers may be considered for permanent entry-level roles such as Accounts Assistant or Junior Accountant, particularly if vacancies arise and they meet ZimParks’ recruitment criteria. Further growth depends on gaining professional certification (e.g., ZICA membership), performance appraisals, and alignment with the Authority’s staffing plans and national public service regulations.

What benefits—such as leave, medical aid, or pension—are typically offered to Accounting Interns in Zimbabwean parastatals?

Interns are usually entitled to statutory annual leave (22 days) and sick leave under the Labour Act, though medical aid and pension contributions are generally not provided during internship contracts. Some parastatals offer limited access to occupational health services or referral support through government health facilities.

How should I apply for this internship, and what do Zimbabwean employers like ZimParks specifically look for in candidates?

Applications must be submitted via ZimParks’ official website or designated channels (e.g., ZIMRA or PSCZ portals), accompanied by certified academic documents and a clear motivation letter referencing Zimbabwe’s public finance context. Employers prioritise candidates with verified academic credentials, basic computer literacy (especially Excel), evidence of ethical conduct, and familiarity with local tax frameworks like VAT and PAYE.
