Background

International Medical Corps is a consortium member implementing the USAID-Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) funded Resilience Food Security Activity (RFSA), Amalima Loko in Matabeleland North province of Zimbabwe. The USD75 million Amalima Loko project seeks to elevate the livelihoods of more than 67,000 vulnerable households across five districts of Zimbabwe’s Matabeleland North: Binga, Hwange, Lupane, Nkayi, and Tsholotsho.

The project looks at improving human health and livelihoods, with the health and nutrition component (Purpose 3) looking at improving the adoption of care, nutrition, health, and WASH practices for women of reproductive age (WRA) and children under five (CU5) years. The project also aims to improve nutritional adequacy among WRA & CU5. International Medical Corps’ role is to technically lead on the health and nutrition activities for Amalima Loko.

International Medical Corps is looking for the above short-term positions to support the project to conduct a Nutrition Causal Analysis (NCA) in Matabeleland North province. The NCA will provide Amalima Loko with a contextualized understanding of the causal pathways of undernutrition and the context specific causes of undernutrition in the project areas as well as identify the most promising pathways to change. The NCA will enable the program to design a more effective, context-specific response to address and prevent malnutrition.

Job summary

The Research Assistant, with support from the Lead Analyst of the Modified Nutrition Causal Analysis, will participate in the data collection, participatory exercises, transcription of data, data entry and other key research activities.

Job description

• Participation in the development of qualitative data collection tools, including a variety of documentation for participatory exercises, to ensure contextual adaptation;
• Conduct formal and informal interviews, conduct group discussions and participatory exercises, as indicated by the NCA Lead Analyst;
• Take relevant and detailed notes in all community exchanges;
• Transcription of registered community exchanges;
• Electronic data entry;
• Lead ranking of results with affected communities;
• Lead daily debriefings and initial analysis of collected data.

Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse

Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within International Medical Corps and amongst beneficiaries served by International Medical Corps

Qualifications

• Advanced University Degree (Master’s) in Nutrition, Health, Gender, or other Social Sciences/ Professional experience in the fields of health, nutrition, food security, water, sanitation and hygiene, gender, or anthropology;
• Professional experience in qualitative research of at least two years;
• At least 6 months of team management experience;
• Experience working in rural areas with regular field trips

Required competencies

• Perfect mastery of isiNdebele/Tonga/ Nambiya and English (read / written / spoken);
• Excellent communication skills;
• Excellent writing skills;
• Knowledge of Matabeleland North districts;
• Strong leadership skills;
• Ability to work independently and as a team member;
• Neutrality, objectivity, sensitivity to local context, perseverance;
• Sound research experience;

Preferred:

• Previous experience in KAP, SQUEAC, SMART, Barrier Analysis, and/or NCA methodologies
