Most employers require a National Certificate in Boilermaking from a recognized institution like Harare Polytechnic or Bulawayo Polytechnic. A red seal or trade test certificate from the Zimbabwe National Qualifications Authority significantly improves your prospects. Apprenticeship training under a registered company is highly valued.

You will fabricate, install, and repair boilers, tanks, and pressure vessels using welding, cutting, and metalworking techniques. Daily tasks include reading blueprints, inspecting equipment for defects, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. Maintenance shutdowns often require overtime work.

Punctuality and reliability are essential, as production downtime is costly in mining and manufacturing sectors. Employers expect strict adherence to safety protocols, including proper use of PPE. Teamwork is important, but individual accountability for quality workmanship is equally stressed.

With experience, you can advance to supervisory roles such as foreman or workshop manager. Specializing in pressure vessel certification or underwater welding opens higher-paying contract opportunities. Some experienced boilermakers establish their own fabrication workshops.

Large mining companies and industrial firms usually provide medical aid, pension contributions, and annual leave. Smaller workshops may offer fewer formal benefits but sometimes include transport allowances or food subsidies. Unionized workplaces often negotiate collective bargaining agreements with better terms.

Submit applications directly to mining houses, manufacturing plants, and engineering firms, or register with the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund. Employers prioritize practical welding demonstrations and verified work references over paper qualifications alone. A portfolio documenting completed projects strengthens your application.
