DIESEL PLANT FITTER

Most employers require a National Certificate in Plant or Diesel Plant Fitting from a recognized institution like Harare Polytechnic or Bulawayo Polytechnic. A Class 1 Journeyman certificate from the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Programme significantly improves your prospects. Some mining and industrial companies also accept apprenticeships combined with relevant trade tests.

You will diagnose faults, repair and maintain diesel engines, generators, compressors, and heavy plant equipment. Daily tasks include routine servicing, component replacement, hydraulic system repairs, and keeping maintenance records. In mining or agricultural settings, you may also work on excavators, bulldozers, and irrigation pumps.

Expect early starts and long hours, especially in mining and farming sectors where equipment downtime is costly. Employers value reliability and problem-solving under pressure, with overtime common during breakdowns. Safety compliance is strictly enforced, particularly on mines where you must follow ZESA and Minerals Act regulations.

With experience, you can advance to Lead Fitter, Workshop Supervisor, or Maintenance Manager roles. Further specialization in hydraulics, electronics, or heavy mining equipment opens doors to senior technical positions. Some fitters transition into entrepreneurship by establishing their own repair workshops.

Large mining and industrial employers usually provide medical aid, pension contributions, and annual leave as part of employment contracts. Housing or transport allowances are sometimes included, particularly for remote site positions. Smaller companies may offer fewer formal benefits, so terms should be clarified before accepting any offer.

Apply directly to mining houses, agricultural estates, engineering firms, and manufacturing companies, or register with recruitment agencies in Harare and Bulawayo. Employers prioritize hands-on experience, a valid driver's license, and proven troubleshooting abilities. A well-documented work history and strong references from previous supervisors significantly strengthen your application.
