Employers value humility, initiative in learning, and fluency in English and at least one local language (e.g., Shona or Ndebele) for effective communication with colleagues and customers.

Successful interns often progress to Junior Technician roles, then to Certified Tyre Technician (after passing ZIMTA or ZIAAT assessments), and eventually to Workshop Supervisor or Service Advisor with further training and experience. Some pursue entrepreneurship — opening roadside tyre bays or partnering with established garages — supported by institutions like the Youth Development Fund or RBZ’s Command Agriculture-linked mechanisation grants.

Interns are usually covered under the employer’s statutory obligations: 30 days’ annual leave pro rata, access to basic occupational medical cover (often through clinics like Medifriend or local hospital partnerships), and inclusion in the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) pension scheme. However, private medical aid and performance bonuses are rare at the intern level and depend on employer size and policy.
