Study Coordinator

CHAI Zimbabwe is working with the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MOHCC) to eliminate vertical transmission of HIV from a mother to her child. To this end, CHAI and MOHCC are collaborating on a study to improve viral load (VL) monitoring for pregnant women living with HIV who are on treatment. CHAI Zimbabwe is seeking to hire a Study Coordinator with applied research skills and experience in resource-limited settings to coordinate the study. The Coordinator will report to the Senior Program Manager, HIV/TB Diagnostics and Treatment and will work with the Principal Investigator of the study and MoHCC teams. The position will require up to 75% travel time around the country.
Responsibilities
- Day to day oversight of the study activities including preparation through trainings, implementation and data analysis
- Assist in the preparation of research protocols, ethical review committee applications and trial registry submission
- Work with PI and CHAI co-investigators to assist in the preparation of standard operating procedures (SOPs), study materials, job-aids, etc. for all study tasks to enable correct training for health facility staff on study objectives and implementation
- Ensure SOPs are being implemented as described, by actively monitoring data collection processes and expected outcomes
- Regularly travel to study sites to oversee study implementation and participate in data collection and data quality monitoring
- Support implementation of study interventions at both control and intervention clinics, working directly with facilities and clinical staff
- Pro-actively identify, anticipate and address major implementation challenges, including issues with study recruitment, following of protocols, following of ethical and best practice standards, or any other concerns raised by health care workers or participants
- Support to develop, pilot and finalize data collection tools, including translation, wording, structure, and formatting as needed
- Manage data validation and quality checks, including checking for consistency between primary data sources and electronic databases in support of high data quality
- With support from CHAI Zimbabwe management, assist to recruit, train and manage data collectors and/or study assistants at the health facility
- Ensure complete and accurate documentation of all study variables at health facility level
- Ensure timely data collection as well as generation of reports for health facility staff and data collector for appropriate actions
- Communicate progress of the study on a regular basis with co-investigators
- Support with report writing and dissemination of results in effective presentations and publications
- Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders in-country directly related to the study
- Assist in the management of the study budget
- Other duties as required
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in public health, statistics, biology or other relevant field, and 3+ years of relevant health-related work experience
- Master’s of Public Health or equivalent and 1+ years relevant work experience (preferred)
- Experience in, and understanding of, quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
- Experience with Android-based electronic data collection systems, such as Open Data Kit or SurveyCTO
- Data management skills with demonstrated experience with Excel (required) and Access (optional)
- Experience implementing health-related implementation studies and collecting data at rural health facilities in sub-Saharan Africa
- Project, people and relationship management experience
- Excellent diplomatic and interpersonal skills, and an ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of partners and stakeholders
- Reflect exceptional organizational, planning and coordination skills
- Demonstrate the ability to prioritize work and function with minimal supervision
