Practical Action, an international technology development organization head quartered in the United Kingdom and with offices in Asia, Bangladesh, East Africa, Southern Africa, Latin America and Sudan, seeks to fill this position in our Agriculture Systems and Innovation Department.

Team purpose
Improve food and nutrition security for the smallholder famers using simple technologies, increasing their knowledge and access to markets.
Job purpose
To lead the integration of gender sensitive programming elements in accordance with global best practice, donor requirements and Practical Action requirements. The Gender Advisor participates in strategy, project implementation, monitoring, evaluation in relation to gender integration in the project that is focused on nutrition sensitive and nutrition specific interventions at community and household level. This includes capacity building and technical assistance to government, civil society and community stakeholders.
Provide technical leadership to the Project to ensure integration of gender in program interventions focused on nutrition, agriculture and livelihoods; Design and deliver realistic and pragmatic gender strategies and programming interventions that will lead to positive gender equality outcomes; Track and report against gender indicators and disaggregate data by gender to analyze results within each domain; Conduct gender assessments, reviews and audits to assess ways to continually target involvement of women in nutrition sensitive and nutrition specific activities; Review and provide technical feedback on results and project reports to donors in order to ensure quality and full compliance with gender policy and progress towards achieving integration of gender in program; Develop tools, frameworks and resources to enable better gender integration in the Project; Identify successful practices in the project that can be showcased in publications, communication materials and conferences; Prepare communications materials that highlight the project’s gender equality programming, successes and lessons learnt; Develop, oversee and ensure the implementation and monitoring of the Gender Action Plan at all levels and ensure that gender and vulnerable groups’ dimensions are integrated throughout the project cycle, IEC materials, organization structure and other aspects of implementation and reflected accordingly; Maintain regular communication on gender issues and related tasks with provincial and district level structures; Ensure that women and men’s particular needs are addressed equally in disaster risk management process, and help specify how gender issues will be addressed in the implementation of the disaster strategy; Pay special attention to address women’s needs in the prioritization of project activities and other interventions like rural finance, as well as throughout the project life; Ensure gender and vulnerable groups-differentiated data is collected and evaluated to define gaps and provide specific training and awareness activities in order to enhance equal representation and opportunities for women in the organization and the project; Coordinate with other partner organizations and/or groups in the 3 districts of Makoni, Mutasa and Mutare and collaborate with programme management and personnel to integrate gender throughout the programme; Oversee and coordinate work related to gender activities including routine monitoring of program activities, gender analysis and special studies report as needed; Assess gender dynamics in the selected clusters and value chains in coordination with other Advisors addressing barriers to improving participation of men and women in LFSP activities; Facilitate the development of operational manuals to ensure gender equity and sensitivity in manual content and presentation; Participate in gender related meetings for the consortium and collaborate with local women’s groups, gender focused organizations and other groups implementing similar gender related activities in similar areas; Ensure gender impacts and resource utilization are tracked, monitored, analysed and reported via the MEAL system; Propose indicators and data collection methods for tracking changes in women’s empowerment, gender dynamics and gender inequality gaps; Participate in induction of new staff and provide guidance on the implementation of gender initiatives relevant to the project; Develop support documents for project implementation which address the gender issues identified during gender analysis. Work closely with the Team Leader to finalize proposals through making contributions to consolidated projects; Lead in liaison with LFSP APN team in the development of genderized project log frame and budget; Forecast on cash requirements, monitor budget expenditure and procurement of gender related project material at district level monthly; Compile, update float trackers, training budgets and budgets for any other relevant field activities on a monthly basis; Generate Quarterly procurement plan in liaison with team leader; Project/forecast vehicle, cash and procurement requirements where necessary; Oversee the mainstreaming of gender in the consortium across implementing partners; Advise HR on the recruitment of staff, and in the identification of capacity building needs for the programme teams, and organize relevant trainings / mentoring programmes / exchange visits to build expertise within the team; Participate in interviews for line staff, carry out monthly coordination meetings, conduct quarterly review meetings and conduct support and supervision visits monthly.
Key qualifications
A First Degree in Gender Studies; A Master’s Degree or higher in the relevant subject area(s), preferably in Gender, Social Work, Public Health, International development or Community Development.
Key competences
A Proven record of excellent management, leadership, decision-making and interpersonal skills; Demonstrated ability to ensure gender integration in project design, implementation and ME; Effective English oral and written communication skills, ability to interact professionally in English; Ability to navigate politically sensitive terrain and maintain constructive relationships with a diverse set of key stakeholders; Demonstrated ability to think strategically and transmit vision to partners and colleagues; Budget, programme and project monitoring, management and evaluation; Capacity in developing and writing proposals; Good communication in written and spoken English as well effective project and people management skills.
Essential
Strong team leadership skills and the ability to motivate and facilitate the work of programme teams; Analytical and strategic planning skills; strong organizational skills and an ability to plan projects and timetable activities; Excellent capacity building skills – the ability to work with people of different technical abilities and support them to gain confidence in areas of expertise within their programmes and in diverse nutrition approaches; Excellent teamwork skills and the ability to build good relations both internally and externally; Awareness of community-based approaches to improving nutrition and food security; Proven experience in liaising with government officials, other NGOs and donors; Good computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel and PowerPoint, SMART, Epi-Info and/or other relevant statistics packages; Demonstrable understanding and experience of cross cutting issues i.e. HIV/AIDS, gender equity issues, Child Protection and their relevance to humanitarian response work.
Relevant job experience
At least 3 years related experience in planning, implementing and assessing project implementation with a gender perspective; Experience working in societies with low gender and development indicators, the private sector and / or with private sector development projects; A proven record of personal knowledge of working in consortium set ups; Excellent capacity building skills – the ability to work with people of different technical abilities and support them to gain confidence in areas of expertise.
