Consultant – Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (ZELA)

Consultant to Develop a Documentary: Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (ZELA)
Deadline: 14 February 2020

Project background
10% of people in the artisanal and small-scale mining sector are women. ASM is currently a dangerous and unsafe workplace for women. Research has shown that climate change impacts like persistent droughts and destructive cyclones hinder the ability of rural households to grow food from their fields-yields are declining. Given such pressures, artisanal mining becomes a lucrative form of livelihood. An outcry by women in artisanal mining and women who live in proximity to gold mines was made. The women are calling for a total banning of the machetes. Women miners indicate that the machetes are a disaster waiting to happen as the rampant spread of violence at ASGM sites and surrounding villages continues unabated. In fact the women are living in fear of machete wielding gangs who are raiding their communities and mines. The menace of the machete wielding gangs has spread to town centres where ASM is rife. It is urgent that a sustained campaign be conducted amplifying women’s voices against rampant violence they face as a result of criminality in ASGM

With this background, ZELA is seeking a consultant to produce a documentary on the effects of the Machete gangs on women in the ASM sector of Zimbabwe . The suitable consultant should have a track record of producing High quality documentaries available on YouTube. The produced documentary should have clear voice overs, narratives and subtitles. The Consultant should be available for 6 days in the field capturing stories from the women
