JOB TITLE: Community Mobilization Specialist

Organisational Background
The Organisation of Rural Associations for Progress (ORAP) is a leading local NGO involved in development and relief (emergency) work in rural communities in Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South and Midlands provinces. It exists to fight all forms of poverty among the rural and urban grassroots communities of disadvantaged women, men and youth through the empowerment of people by facilitating their development in their diverse cultural contexts.
Project Summary
The vacancy for the upcoming USAID funded Amalima Loko Project. The project seeks to improve food security through increased food access and sustainable watershed management. Its purposes are P1: Enhanced and inclusive local ownership over food security and resilience planning and development, P2: Watershed management improved, P3: Adaptive and absorptive capacity improved
Position summary
The incumbent will work closely with the Community Visioning Lead to ensure that communities are mobilized and empowered to achieve elf reliance and resilience. The Community Mobilisation Specialist will support field staffs, Project Coordinators, in implementing project activities in communities by using different approaches such as community mobilizing and advocacy working with both government, community leaders and project committees during implementation of project activities in ensuring that activities are implemented according to the Amalima concept and in accordance with the technical and donor guidelines and that all the necessary project documentation is generated on time and correctly
Major Duties/Responsibilities include:-
Community engagement
- Identify and secure the most transparent community leaders (i.e. stakeholders, opinion makers, gate keepers, boasters, barriers, traditional leaders, elected councillors, religious Leaders, and village activists) for help voluntarily in mandate of community mobilization and demands generation
- Conduct Social Assessment exercises as to identify gaps in people’s knowledge on food and nutrition security and watershed management, and explore most common issues, needs, problems and priorities including the underlying causes behind the problem and find most appropriate communal solutions & collective efforts,
- Strengthen Community Groups capacities to plan and carry out their action plans, ensure that the community does what it planned to do and monitor community progress frequently,
- Initiate reflection and create dialogue on problems and solutions in the community related to improve food and nutrition security through increased food access and sustainable watershed management
Capacity Development
- Ensures that communities are mobilised and understand the AMALIMA concept.
- Ensures that community stakeholders are involved in developing and executing mobilisation activities
- Works with AMALIMA and ORAP team members to design technical assistance packages that are culturally relevant and accessible to rural communities.
- Ensures that technical, programmatic, administrative and monitoring and evaluation activities are carried out according to USAID policies and procedures as well as meeting cultural expectations of communities
- Develop traditional and indigenous materials and resources to preserve culture, memory and practice. This include story and song books, recipes, photographs, art work etc
Actively participate in Amalima Loko flagship events and celebrations that advance the organisation’s objectives in areas that promote and develop wellness.
Community Visioning
- Generating local solutions and strategies for addressing food and nutrition security issues.
- Mobilizing communities to work jointly to address these issues through building on existing cohesion among community members
Foster cohesion where it is weak and ensuring psychological safety of poor and marginalized people to participate, contribute, and feel integrated
Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
- Education: A bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Development Studies, Social Sciences or related fields
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an NGO environment at management level
- Self-motivated starter who needs minimum supervision

- Strong understanding of local cultural practices, social networks, and gender and age dynamics strongly preferred;
- Knowledge of agricultural, livelihood, and/or food security programming is preferred;
- Experience with international donor projects required, experience with USAID and Food for Peace preferred;
- Strong oral and written English skills required, knowledge of local languages (Ndebele, Tonga, Nambya) preferred
- Track record of success in grant fundraising, including donor relations and proposal writing
Work Environment:
The position requires ability and willingness to travel domestically up to 70% of the time in the field
