Communications Intern

Background

The ILO Country Office for Zimbabwe and Namibia provides strategic oversight and guidance on world of work issues to the countries under its coverage. The Country Office is seeking a Communications Intern to help promote ILO work and messages, as well as monitor its communications activities and impact among targeted audiences and the general public. The Office also undertakes communications initiatives on behalf of the ILO’s global communications unit in Geneva and liaises with the Regional Office for Africa in Abidjan. The Office’s communications and advocacy work relates to key issues and themes of the ILO turning 100 years, the Decent Work Agenda, the ZimbabweWorking campaign and its promotion and implementation through projects and programmes.

The intern will report to the Communications Officer. The intern will support activities relating to communications, advocacy and media, including social media.

While the internship is for a minimum period of three months, it has the potential of extension to a maximum of six months. This will be a paid internship and the appointed person will be expected to work full-time.

Description of duties

The intern will assist with:

  • The development of content (text, graphics, slide shows, digital cards, tweets) and implementation of targeted social media campaigns for the Office.
  • Providing technical assistance/support to ILO social media activities and campaigns in the Office (including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, among others) and preparing a monthly tracking and impact monitoring system for the ILO to assess effectiveness of social media channels.
  • Selecting, uploading and reviewing ILO Harare photos for uploading on appropriate online albums such as Flickr;
  • Preparation of stories and articles to up date the Office website through the information received from projects and DWCP deliverables, as well as on going activities, reports, audio visual products;
  • Preparation of stories or articles through information received from ILO constituents and other partners for the Office and other newsletters;
  • Preparation and dissemination of press releases and other information packs to media houses, including electronic and social media;
  • Support the identification of social media contacts, networks, think tanks and blogs relevant to ILO work and DWCP deliverables;
  • Participation in drafting and preparation of media plans for the various events of the Office;
  • Supporting the production of brochures, posters/banners and other project communication leaflets;
  • Assist in developing social media focused infographics, impact photos and stories;
  • Assist in the organization, creation and updating of the photo library and creation of video library;
  • Develop and manage communication content for the TV at the Front Office
  • The development of visual communications products, such as PowerPoint presentations, and other visual media;
  • Any other assignment requiring communications support, such as events set up, media requests and follow-up

Experience/Skills

  • A minimum of two years of professional experience in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or related fields;
  • Capability and proven experience in developing and executing social media strategies and campaigns ideally in a non-profit context;
  • Familiarity with public relations and branding compliance;
  • Excellent and demonstrable written, oral and interpersonal skills;
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of different social media platforms and familiarity with updatingnof content for the website and social media channels.

Education

  • A university degree in the field of communication, public relations, journalism or marketing;

  • Promotes and persuades others to consider new ideas;

  • Ability to assist with implementing messaging strategies;
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Some competency in graphic design and publishing software, such as Adobe Illustrator and In Design, as well as audio-visual production tools.
