Who we are
Urgent Action Fund-Africa (UAF-Africa) is a feminist, pan-African, Rapid Response Fund committed to transforming power relations through resourcing African feminists and woman human rights defenders and their formations as an act of solidarity. Recognising the need to move resources rapidly on a continent where opportunities and threats arise and decline quickly, UAF-Africa uses a Rapid Response Grant making mechanism to support unanticipated, time sensitive, innovative and unique initiatives that promote woman’s agency in peace and political participation, social and economic power building as well as natural resources governance and stewardship. The Fund works to support African Woman Human Rights Defenders (AWHRDs), particularly in the feminist and woman’s rights movements, in their actions, which enable them to support and sustain themselves, each other and their work before, during and after urgent situations.
UAF-Africa mobilizes resources from a broad base of international and increasingly local funders committed to protecting and advancing woman’s rights and feminist agendas in Africa. Our primary purpose is to provide funding to AWHRDs and their groups, organizations, and the movements to help them prepare for and navigate urgent situations with appropriate actions.
UAF-Africa is registered in Kenya and Zimbabwe. Operating as a virtual organisation, the Fund boasts of strategic physical presence in East Africa: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Nairobi, Kenya and Kampala, Uganda; North Africa: Cairo, Egypt; Central Africa: Bujumbura, Burundi and Douala, Cameroon; Southern Africa: Harare, Zimbabwe, Antananarivo, Madagascar, Johannesburg, South Africa, Lilongwe, Malawi, and West Africa: Abuja, Nigeria and Cotonou, Benin.
Position overview
Reporting to the Director Partnerships and Development, the P&D Research Attaché will assist the Partnerships programme team in seeking out information and trends through various information mediums on matters impacting the advancement of women’s human rights on the continent. Conduct research and provide factual analysis to assist in the preparation of reports, write-ups and trends for the Fund.
Specific responsibilities
The incumbent will assist the Programme Offices (Partnerships and Development & Communications and The Office of the Director) in:
Program duties
- Use multiple streams of data within UAF-Africa programme units to produce quarterly updates on the impact of UAF-Africa’s work for external audiences including donors, grantees and the public;
- Work with the relevant portfolios to develop the annual trends analysis for the Fund;
- Research, collate and write captivating content and stories of change from UAF-Africa’s grantmaking narratives and grantees’ work for use on UAF-Africa’s website, digital newsletter and social media platforms;
- Conduct analysis of UAF-Africa’s grants to determine level of success and produce quarterly internal updates and reflections on the successes of grants as well as identify areas of improvement;
- Conduct research on specific issues and subject areas related to UAF-Africa’s programming interests;
- Support in compiling data for reviews and reports writing purposes;
- Write articles based on UAF-Africa’s research findings and prepare research manuscripts and presentations;
- Develop and maintain the UAF-Africa research database ensuring easy retrieval in organization’s shared area (i.e., SharePoint).
Support duties
- Assist with administrative and logistics needs in regards conferences and convenings i.e., Work with the responsible team on planned Convenings and any other such activities as is necessary;
- Offer support functions within the Harare Office that might arise within the office and from various portfolio’s i.e., minute taking, printing, scanning, filing and other such clerical duties;
- The research attaché will also be expected to perform any other ad-hoc duties as assigned that fall within these parameters.
Qualifications
- Degree in Social Sciences, Women’s Studies, Political Sciences, International Development, Law or related fields;
- French Language skills an advantage.
Skills and experience
- At least one year experience in research and development is required;
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Flexibility and willingness to travel on the African continent and beyond as and when required;
- An understanding of gender equality and women’s rights issues, particularly in politically unstable and post conflict African settings;
- Familiarity with the women’s rights development needs in Africa;
- Passionate about UAF-Africa’s mission, committed to teamwork, and achieving results and building effective teams;
- Excellent inter-personal, public speaking, writing and negotiation skills;
- Experience working in a virtual work environment an added advantage.
Work environment
