Organisational Background
The Organisation of Rural Associations for Progress (ORAP) is a leading local NGO involved in development and relief (emergency) work in rural communities in Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South and Midlands provinces. It exists to fight all forms of poverty among the rural and urban grassroots communities of disadvantaged women, men and youth through the empowerment of people by facilitating their development in their diverse cultural contexts.
Position summary
The incumbent is expected to ensure that ORAP complies with national laws, donor agreements, and also enforce compliance with ORAP Constitution, policies and procedures
Major Duties/Responsibilities include:-
- Providing legal advice to ORAP
- Ensuring ORAP’s compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements in its operations
- Monitoring and reducing the occurrence of risk within the organization by creating effective action plans to identified risks
- Drafting internal systems and procedures to mitigate and manage risk.
- Participating in review and negotiation of grants to ensure alignment to internal policies.
- Supervising subordinates
- Upholding the ORAP Vision, Mission and Strategic Plan
- Liaising with legal representatives on behalf of ORAP in litigation proceedings
- Interpreting and drafts some legal documents for ORAP
Non- core activities
- Advising employees on any new laws and regulations
- Inducting new employees on ORAP’s systems and procedures
- Performing any other duties as delegated by the CEO
- Recording minutes during Board meetings
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Laws Degree required.
- CIS, Finance or Business Management Degree would be an added advantage
Experience
- At least two years experience in a legal or compliance officer role
- Should have experience in risk management
- Should have previously worked with people of different age groups in a culturally diverse environment
Relevant attributes
- Should possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Computer literate and familiar with software packages used at ORAP
- Possess a good knowledge of legal requirements and procedures
- Should be highly analytical and with strong attention to detail
- Valid Class 4 driver’s license
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work flexible hours
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
