  1. POST: DIRECTOR – RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT 

 

 

Station: Head Office, Harare 

 

 

Job Purpose

 

The Director – Research and Development assists with strategic leadership in the planning, coordination, implementation, and dissemination of research, conservation, and heritage management activities within the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ). The incumbent will ensure that research and documentation underpin the protection, promotion, and sustainable use of Zimbabwe’s cultural, natural and liberation heritage. 

 

 

Key Responsibilities 

 

 

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for all research, documentation, and heritage conservation programmes. 
  • Oversee the identification, recording, and scientific study of cultural and natural heritage sites, monuments, and museum collections. 
  • Lead multidisciplinary research teams in archaeology, ethnography, natural history, history, and liberation heritage studies. 
  • Develop and implement research policies, frameworks, and priorities consistent with NMMZ’s strategic plan. 
  • Ensure effective conservation, curation, and interpretation of heritage collections and sites. 
  • Coordinate publication and dissemination of research outputs through reports, journals, exhibitions, and digital platforms. 
  • Strengthen collaboration with universities, research institutions, government departments, and international partners. 
  • Supervise the preparation of heritage inventories, nomination dossiers for World Heritage Sites, and heritage impact assessments. 
  • Provide professional guidance and capacity building to regional museums and monuments staff. 
  • Mobilize resources and manage budgets for research and development programmes. 
  • Advise management and the Board on emerging trends, best practices, and policy issues in heritage research and management. 

 

 

Qualifications and Experience 

 

 

  • A bachelor’s degree in in Archaeology, History, Heritage Studies, Anthropology, Museum Studies or Natural Sciences. 
  • A Master’s Degree in Archaeology, History, Heritage Studies, Anthropology, Museum Studies, Natural Sciences or a related discipline. 
  • A PhD is an added advantage 
  • At least 10 years’ experience, with 5 years at senior management level in a research, museum, or heritage management environment. 
  • Proven record of published research and contributions to heritage management. 
  • Strong understanding of Zimbabwe’s cultural and natural heritage, including heritage legislation and international conventions (e.g. UNESCO 1970, 1972 and 2003 conventions). 
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, fundraising, and stakeholder engagement. 
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills.
