Job Description
Position Summary
The Research Assistant (RA) is a member of the research team and works under the supervision of the Knowledge Management Advisor. The RA must be a self-motivated individual who is experienced in collecting qualitative and quantitative data, including abstraction of patient level data from health facility registers. This role will include collecting, accurately capturing, and maintaining research data in study database. He/she will work closely with the research officer, the principal investigator and the study sites staff to ensure timely and accurate collection of research data. The RA will also be involved in recruiting and consenting of study participants.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with health facility staff to identify people living with HIV (PLHIV) in care who meet the study inclusion criteria, as well as locate files of PLHIV to use for data abstraction.
- Consent study participants before any study specific activity is conducted.
- Abstract patient level data from patient files into study data collection tools.
- Collect quantitative and qualitative data from eligible PLHIV using structured questionnaire and in-depth interview guide.
- Perform data quality checks, verify and clean all data before storage.
- Ensure complete, accurate and timely capture of all study data into electronic databases, review and make necessary corrections to the data.
- Liaise with facility level healthcare workers to resolve questions, inconsistencies, or missing data on entering patient level data into study database.
- Respond to enquiries regarding data as requested by supervisor.
- Maintain confidentiality of all data collected.
- Compile and prepare weekly update reports.
- Qualitative data transcription and translation.
- Ensure compliance with ZHI, national and international guidelines and ethics governing implementation of human subjects’ research.
- Report any adverse events within 24 hours, and protocol deviations to the supervisor.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- Diploma/degree in nursing, public health, or social science.
- Minimum 1-year experience collecting qualitative and quantitative research data including abstracting client-level data.
- Proven experience in conducting research at health facilities in Zimbabwe.
- Human Subjects Protection (HSP) or Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training courses on research ethics
- Experience in use of electronic data collection tools e.g., Kobo.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and self-driven.
Skills and Abilities
- Computer literacy (ICDL certificate).
- Good attention to detail and documentation skills.
- Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds in health facilities.
- Ability to speak, read and write local languages (Shona and Ndebele).
