JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) with funding from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) has engaged the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) of Zimbabwe to implement the GEF-7 Project, through an Operational Partners

Agreement (OPA).

The project is being implemented from December 2021 to November 2026. The project is part of a global impact programme led by FAO, titled the Sustainable Forest Management impact Programme on Dryland Sustainable Landscapes. In Zimbabwe, the project will promote sustainable forest and land management in dryland landscapes in the South Eastern low-veld of Zimbabwe. It will support a cross-sector approach which will result in mainstreaming of sustainable forest and land management to enhance ecosystem resilience for improved livelihoods in the Save and Runde Catchments of Zimbabwe.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the positions of PROJECT FIELD ASSISTANT (2 Positions) under this project. These positions are full-time contracts, renewable every two years.

Station: Mutare and Masvingo with travel to the project landscape.

 

Under the supervision of the NPC through the Provincial Environmental Manager (PEM). the Project Field Assistants will be responsible for the implementation of the project interventions in each sub-basins. They will assist the NPC with the planning, stakeholder coordination, knowledge management, implementation support and monitoring of project activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the implementation of Annual Work Plans and Budget Plan (AWP/B) in their respective sub-basin (target landscape):
  • Assists with the development of detailed TORs for short-term consultants and contracts for local service provision, assists with their selection, recruitment, contracting, and monitors and supervises their work to ensure timely delivery of outputs to an acceptable standard;
  • Monitors and maintains records of project expenditures in the sub-basin;
  • Assists the NPC with the set-up and implementation of the project M&E system;
  • Provides required information for preparation of project progress reports including on co-financing initiatives:
  • Ensures regular communication and promotes close collaboration with government and Non-governmental partners in the sub-basins;
  • Ensures continuous collaboration, communication and team work with the other field assistant,
  • Provides support with domestic logistic, mission planning, access to data and report, and organization of meetings with relevant officials for experts’ missions;
  • Facilitates the different workshops to be organized during the project period and supports the preparation of workshop reports/proceedings as applicable;
  • Provides technical advice to ensure that the appropriate approaches are followed during project implementation (participatory and integrated approaches, multi-stakeholder participation, etc.).
  • Performs other duties as may be required by the NPC in order to ensure that project operations proceed according to schedule and foreseen project results are achieved in both sub-basins.

Qualification, Experience and Competences:

  • Degree in Environment / Natural Resources Management’ Project Monitoring and Evaluation and Planning, Forestry or any other relevant fields.
  • Proven experience with conducting monitoring and evaluating, performance and progress of UN or other country/regional/global development donor projects.
  • Experience in drylands ecosystems would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of Land Degradation Neutrality would be an advantage.
