Environment Africa a member of the consortium led by CARE Zimbabwe, which is implementing the TAKUNDA project in Buhera, Chivi, Mutare and Zaka Districts of Zimbabwe seeks to recruit an experienced, dynamic and innovative Environmental Specialist to be based at the Takunda Project office in Mutare. The Takunda project seeks to empower women; create sustainable livelihoods; facilitate adoption of improved practices/technologies; improve governance and social accountability; and ultimately strengthen HH and community resilience. The Environmental Specialist’s responsibilities and qualifications include but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Ability to lead the design and implementation of sound and sustainable environmental practices and climate risk management for project interventions, such as preventing renewable resource depletion and illegal harvesting across the districts.
  • Contribute input to a contracted team led by Sun Mountain International LLC (SMTN) who will be conducting an Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) and other environmental compliance analyses for the Donor pursuant to US Regulation 22 CFR 216, such as a pesticide Safer Use Action Plan (SUAP), Water Quality Assurance Plan (WQAP) and an Environmental Assessment (EA) for watershed activities, etc.; specifically, the Specialist will provide input for all project activities deemed likely to have a potential environmental impact and recommend measures that will be taken to mitigate any environmental hazards that may result from project activities;
  • Contribute input and recommend adaptation strategies during a Climate Risk Management (CRM) screening process that will be led by SMTN;
  • Ensure that appropriate environmental and climate measures are proposed and met;
  • Undertake follow-up monitoring to ensure that proposed mitigation measures and climate risk management strategies are implemented according to set guidelines;
  • Conduct supervision and monitoring field visits, including performing spot checks for environmental compliance, to all implementing partners’ sites.
  • Oversee or support reporting efforts on environmental and climate indicators, as well as ensure the completion of environmental and social screening of site-specific activities for which implementing partners will conduct their activities.
  • Collaborate with Sun Mountain International LLC (SMTN) for the delivery of environment and climate workshops and other capacity building components;
  • Assisting SMTN in piloting the new USAID NEAT+ system;
  • Work with SMTN to develop case studies on environmental and climate risk management and best practice.
  • Capacity building on environmental tools and frameworks, especially for NRM Staff and for implementing partners.
  • Provide input to implementing staff, the Donor, and SMTN as required, which may be monthly, quarterly and/or annually, on environmental impacts, climate risks, and mitigation/adaptation measures.
  • Willingness to coordinate efforts and collaborate with the Disaster Risk Reduction Specialist, as appropriate.
