Hwange Colliery Company Limited is Zimbabwe’s oldest coal mining enterprise, headquartered in the town of Hwange in Matabeleland North province. The company operates underground and opencast mines producing thermal coal for domestic power generation and industrial use, as well as coking coal for the steel industry. It supplies the majority of its output to the Zimbabwe Power Company for the Hwange Thermal Power Station, which provides critical baseload electricity to the national grid. The colliery has faced operational challenges including aging equipment and working capital constraints, yet remains strategically vital to Zimbabwe’s energy security. It is listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange and has historically been among the country’s largest employers in the mining sector.
