This role is ideal for a creative individual who wants to make a meaningful contribution to the empowerment of women and girls in Uganda while experiencing a new culture and being part of a friendly and dynamic team. Individuals who enjoy contributing their own ideas and want to give marginalised women and girls a voice through creative story telling with benefit the most from this role.
Irise International works to support the education and empowerment of women and girls in East Africa. We currently develop resources and deliver training on menstrual health and hygiene, reproductive health and gender roles. Our social enterprise manufactures and sells affordable sanitary products creating sustainable employment for local women and keeping girls in school all month long.
This individual will work under the supervision of the Director (or other senior team members as directed) to support Irise’s communications and fundraising through taking photos, conducting interviews and compiling materials for newsletters, social media and other communication materials used to the share the work and message of Irise International. This fulltime role will be based in our Jinja office, Uganda but may involve some travel back to the UK.
Attending events and visiting projects in order to take photographs and collect information from participants; Preparing and scheduling social media materials on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram; Preparing and sending regular newsletters and donor updates; Updating Irise’s blog and website
Optional involvement in:
Developing communication themes and strategy; Liaising with graphic designers to create engaging content; Seminars and training (on-line or in-person)
Skills and experience: Essential
Graduate; Prior experience volunteering or working for a charity; Able to use Microsoft office, google drive, hootesuite, facebook, instagram and twitter; Able to complete basic photo editing, for example using Paint and Power Point to create simple photos with text quotes; Passionate about supporting the education and empowerment of women and girls; Interested in learning about different cultures and making new friends
Prior experience of managing social media channels or blogs; Any other prior experience of communications, storytelling or online campaigns; Prior experience and interest in photography; Prior experience using photo editing or graphic design software; Able to bring their own SLR camera
Free accommodation in Uganda; Expenses related to work for Irise paid for by the organisation in accordance with Irise’s Expenses Policy; “On the job” training and experience of creative storytelling and use of social media in communications and fundraising; Feedback on writing style and composition; Opportunities to attend relevant online or in person training seminars on behalf of the organisation.
