Job Summary

The Research Supervisor will work closely with the Senior Researcher in the coordination and implementation of the Young Adult Survey of Zimbabwe (YAZ). The cadre will be responsible for the implementation of the project in the selected districts of Zimbabwe including supervision, monitoring and coordination of field data collection activities. He/she will work closely with team leaders, data collectors, laboratory coordinator and the Senior Researcher.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Technical Advisor- SIE, the Research Supervisor will perform the following duties, but are not limited to:

  • Provide support, monitoring and supervision to YAZ implementation
  • Ensures proper  standard operating procedures are followed during data collection
  • Support maintenance of all survey regulatory documentation including correspondence with relevant IRBs
  • Participate in YAZ Steering Committee (SC) and Technical Working Group (TWG) meetings as required
  • Support preparation and sharing of minutes of all YAZ meetings
  • Provide support during  training of survey data collection teams, implementation of research protocols and study procedures
  • Participate in piloting of survey data collection tools and procedures
  • Work closely with field laboratory scientists and team leaders to ensure that all survey field and laboratory based activities are implemented according to protocol and standard operating procedures
  • Provide administrative and logistical support to ensure smooth implementation of field survey activities including:

a.Requesting and keeping records of stationery and other utilities

b.Ensure all field data collected is being submitted

  • Ensure that foundation assets are properly secured and kept in good working condition
  • Supervision of all data collection teams
  • Participate in data compilation, data cleaning and report writing
  • Work closely with the IT personnel to ensure  maintenance of data collection tablets
  • Participate in regular field monitoring of data collection teams
  • To build capacity of data collectors by providing support in trainings and mentorship
  • Prepare and share regular progress reports on survey field activities
  • Ensure compliance with  IRB regulations
  • Perform any other duties as assigned the supervisor



  • Masters degree in Public health, Social sciences or Demography
  • Research Ethics Certificate is an added advantage
  • At least 4 years proven experience in coordinating research activities
  • Advanced skills in quantitative/statistical data analysis, program evaluation and research methodology
  • Recent experience conducting national household HIV surveys including training staff to conduct interviews and piloting tools is an added advantage
  • Knowledgeable in country level data management and compilation
  • Managerial skills- able to manage/coordinate the staff collecting data
  • Extensive knowledge community structures is a requirement


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Previous working experience in Zimbabwe and knowledge of local culture
  • Ability to work well independently and within a team
  • Good knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS and child protection issues in Zimbabwe
  • Demonstrated oral and writing skills and good interpersonal communication
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Good understanding of research methodologies and  research ethics
  • Good attention to detail and excellent follow-through
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability and willingness to undertake frequent in country travel
