The Board of OUTWARD BOUND ZIMBABWE, a Licensee and Founding Member of OUTWARD BOUND INTERNATIONAL is seeking applications for the role of Executive Director (ED) for the Outward Bound Centre in Chimanimani, due to the impending retirement of the current ED.


The ED is responsible for promoting the ethos of Outward Bound International and reports to the Board of Outward Bound Zimbabwe. A salary commensurate with the role and qualifications, along with performance-based incentives, will be offered.


The ED is responsible for the overall running of the Centre and the courses, the staff and their welfare, and the development of new opportunities to promote the participation of people in the Outward Bound leadership and personal development courses. Currently the organisation runs over 40 courses per annum, but there is opportunity to expand the both the number and type of courses provided by the organisation.


The ED is required to:


  • Display a passion for outdoor education;


  • Provide exemplary leadership to all aspects of the activities and in particular to all aspects of safety to participants and staff;


  • Ensure that the organisation complies with all statutory and organisational (local and international) requirements;


  • Ensure the sound financial management of the organisation in all its aspects, under the supervision of the Board Finance Committee;


  • Develop a marketing strategy that is effective and relevant to both the local and international market.


  • Live on the premises in Chimanimani (housing provided);


  • Prepare and present all requisite reports within agreed time frames.




The successful candidate will have a strong background in education and curriculum development, outdoor experience including mountaineering, rock climbing and water sports, and competency training in at least one or two of these (certificates of training will be requested).


The successful candidate will have experience in both youth and adult education and leadership.


The successful candidate will also have experience in management and leadership and have had held a senior leadership position. The successful candidate will be computer literate and have a proven working knowledge of financial management. Marketing and public speaking skills would be an added advantage.







The organisation requires an innovative, upbeat, experienced person with strong cross-cultural skills who has a great love of the outdoors and the leadership training opportunities that the Chimanimani and other wilderness areas in Zimbabwe offer, and a vision for developing self-reliant citizens through the Outward Bound experience. Candidates will have no addictions or past criminal record, and in line with education requirements internationally, the shortlisted applicants will be required to obtain a police clearance certificate.


The Board will hold interviews for shortlisted candidates in the last 2 weeks of February 2017 and plans to have the successful candidate in place by October 2017 to enable a smooth transition with the retiring ED.
