Position description:


The International Anti Poaching Foundation (IAPF) Green Army program allows IAPF donors from around the world to take part in a volunteer program where they are exposed to the duties and routine of an anti-poaching ranger unit in order to see the positive impact of their donation. Groups of up to ten volunteer donors are housed in basic tented accommodation at IAPF’s Zimbabwe headquarters outside Victoria Falls for periods of between two and eight weeks.


The Green Army Coordinator is responsible for day to day operation and delivery of the IAPF volunteer program in Zimbabwe, ensuring the safety of participating donors and the quality of the volunteer experience with IAPF.


The Green Army Coordinator will seek opportunities to grow the program and introduce new activities in line with the IAPF aims and mission, liaising with the community, potential volunteers, regulators and IAPF management.


In addition to the core volunteer management functions the coordinator will provide support to general conservation and anti-poaching operations at Stanley and Livingston Private Game Reserve as required in collaboration with the Anti Poaching Unit Manager.


Specific duties include:


  • Responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the IAPF Green Army volunteer program for donors including donor/volunteer welfare, programming, program delivery, financial record keeping, logistics and reporting.


  • Camp management, maintenance and security; ensuring the volunteer camp is presented at a high standard with adequate supplies of water, firewood and food.


  • Volunteer donor induction: safety briefings, general orientation etc.


  • Conduct of volunteer training, skills lessons, assessment of safety and suitability for accompanied ranger patrols, etc.


  • Collaboration with the Camp Manager to maintain food budgets, meal plans and coordination of town/shopping trips.


  • In collaboration with other IAPF staff, develop marketing and promotional material for the Green Army program for IAPF social media.


  • Development and improvement of the volunteer/donor experience provided by IAPF.


  • Contract and relationship management associated with the Green Army program, including the hire of guides for the program and liaison with transfer companies and other local suppliers.


  • Coordination of vehicle maintenance.


  • Assist in reserve/wildlife management and anti-poaching support, as required.


Essential selection criteria

  1. Demonstrated experience leading activities in a field environment


  1. Demonstrated problem solving skills, including experience dealing with unexpected challenges in a field environment


  1. Demonstrated experience in the implementation and monitoring of Occupational Health and Safety protocols


  1. High level interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution and working with people of varied cultural backgrounds
  2. A willingness to live for extended periods in a remote camp environment with limited facilities


  1. Demonstrated experience with the Microsoft Office suite of programs


  1. Must hold a current Zimbabwean, International or locally recognised driver’s license


  1. Must hold a recognised first aid qualification (or the ability to gain such qualification on short notice)


Desirable selection criteria

  1. Demonstrated experience with volunteer management in a field environment


  1. Familiarity with the ecology and wildlife of Southern Africa


  1. Proficiency in a language other than English. e.g. French, German, Spanish and/or a Zimbabwean language/dialect.
  2. Guiding and/or hospitality qualifications will be highly regarded


Position particulars


This position includes an initial three-month probation period during which the successful candidate will be assessed on their suitability for the role. If the candidate is deemed suitable for the position after this period the contract will continue for the full 24-month period; if the candidate is deemed unsuitable the contract will be terminated.


During the probation period the wage will be USD550/month. After the probation period the ongoing wage will be USD650/month (subject to annual performance-based review). The package includes all accommodation and meals whilst on the reserve as well as 30 days of annual leave per year. The package also includes a mobile phone with USD20/month credit and full uniform. Accommodation will be in a tented camp alongside volunteers and anti poaching rangers with possible scope for provision of barracks-style accommodation. A shared vehicle for use on the reserve and for duties related to the position is provided. Weekends can be spent in camp at no additional cost or can be spent in town (at own cost). If in camp on a weekend you may be called on to participate in incident response.
