JOB DESCRIPTION
Job purpose
The Finance Officer’s main responsibilities are to prepare financial documents and reports as well as recommending financial action by analyzing accounting options.
Job scope
- To have an understanding of finance practices and concepts to predict future revenues and expenses;
- To prepare financial documents and reports, income statements, accounts and balance sheets;
- To excel in all areas of financial management, assist in setting targets and meeting deadlines;
- To develop and monitor financial control systems and accounting policies;
- To maintain and strengthen internal controls thereby curtailing any losses to the Organisation;
- To ensure health financial status of the Organisation and suggest resource utilisation, and budgets forecasts;
- To guide accounting clerical staff / subordinates by coordinating their activities;
- To advise Director and Employees on changes to statutory and monetary policies that affect the Organisation;
- To fully support and activate financial month-end and year-end close processes;
- To ensure budgetary targets are achieved under constant review.
Accountability
- The Finance Officer is line-managed by the National Director with oversight from the Treasurer;
- Day-to-day task management and support on prioritisation of work will come from the National Director and the SOZ Board.
Key responsibilities
- To perform daily, monthly, quarterly and annual financial activities including cash control, banking and reconciliation of bank accounts;
- To ensure that all accurate records are kept and tax returns are submitted on time;
- To perform constant overviews of the financial operations for the efficient running of the Organisation’s business;
- To coordinate annual and periodic audits with constant review of financial reports;
- To analyse and report on financial status of the Organisation including income statement variances;
- To prepare and analyse budgets and communicate financial results to management;
- To set up and maintain accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures;
- To scrutinize and prepare all payments for authorization by the Director by verifying documents before any disbursements are made;
- To direct internal and external audits to ensure compliance and produce reports / manual highlighting minimum standards;
- To compile and comply with all Corporate Tax and other statutory requirements;
- To provide leadership and effective communication to management , subordinate employees and other Stakeholders;
- To be a strong Team player and demonstrate above average leadership skills;
- To have the ability to work with little or no supervision in their area of employment;
- To hold frequent operational meetings with SOZ team as required;
- To prepare regular Management and Ad Hoc reports as required;
- The incumbent may be required to perform other duties as directed by the National Director from time to time;

- Taking the lead. Being a self-starter and be able to exhibit leadership skills;
- Flexibility and ability and willingness to travel within the country.
Qualifications and experience
- Professional qualifications such as ACCA, CIS, CIMA, or Degree in Accounting / Finance with at least 2 year experience in NGO work.
- Excellent computer skills are required with an understanding of business software packages.
